When people talk about Croydon, are they talking about the town centre or the Borough?

The place has many faults but it's nowhere near as bad as people make out. Has there ever been a town with a worse reputation than Croydon?

When did that happen and what is it now?

I used to work in Rothschild House over 35 years ago and used to drink in The Forum before midweek matches

That would be odd. If I lived in Torbay. Lyme Bay is where us movers and shakers choose the right manure to grow some monsters.

Wow, you and Billy Bragg. Funny how you and he who go on and on about the benefits of diversity, immigration etc, decide to go to a part of the country that does not benefit from these wonderful advantages.

It's the cheaper property, clean air and back to nature feel wot done it, m'lud Lord Justice Goddard, sir.

oh, and Exeter is pretty mixed up culturally but in a 1970's kinda way. A few ethnic grocers, some foreign food restaurants and plenty of overseas students. You would absolutely hate it.

Scaredy cat.

The worst you are going to get out of me now is "I don't necessarily agree with you on that one old chap". And I certainly will not be asking any awkward questions - not blatantly anyway.

Quote Kermit8 at 17 Aug 2015 9.56am

Visited the place after a fourteen year sabbatical last week. Not much has changed re:the soulless atmosphere and peeps shopping like hypnotised morons, apart from being scruffier, but it appears with all the building work going on that is it going to be, according to the Council leader anyway, a new, hip and innovative 'city' which will attract the creatives and entrepreneurial professionals like bees to honey.

Yes, indeed. Building new tall buildings, shops and offices is just what the place has been crying out for. We have been saying that since the 70's.

Good luck with that Mr Council Leader, sir.

Can we have our lovely Allders back first though? That was tough walking past its frontage a few days back. The very epicentre of the town and what is it now? Some kind of mass, cheap indoor market?

S'alright though. Everything is cool. They are bringing in shipping containers next to East Croydon to house small businesses.

Think I might move back.

You missed the point. The building is almost all accommodation. Croydon will have a higher population, especially in the middle. The incomers may well be reasonably well off as it is extremely handy for travel into London and is the second cheapest London Borough. It appears to be mainly flats so expect the younger upwardly mobile types to increase.

I doubt it will ever have soul but I reckon it will go upmarket - let's face it central and North Croydon only have one way to go.

As for everything South of the middle part, it remains pretty pleasant and has lower crime rates than its neighbours in Sutton and Bromley.

????????????????????? What's with the yellow card Legged?

As for Croydon, it's the same as every big town in this country. Do they still have the club shop there? My old dear was walking past once and saw Johhny Salad, Southgate and Nigel Martyn clowning around in there and god bless her she got their autographs for me. Back in 95 I think.

It would be such a shame if you were to go. In fact I don't know how [Link] was able to function without your well researched and erudite views all these years until you came on board.

never been the same since the greyhound closed

The single scariest moment of my life was in the Greyhound. On the night of the Croydon By-election in 1981 I had been out delivering leaflets and knocking on doors to get people to vote right up until 10pm. There was a party afterwards and on the way there the girl I was out with and I decided to go into the Greyhound for a quick pint...........only to discover that the NF had taken over the pub for their election night event. It was like a film scene where the bar goes silent and everyone is watching us. I decide that discretion is the better part of valour and am about to back out the pub when my partner for the evening announces - a little too loudly - that we had come in for a drink and a drink is what we were going to have.

You could hear a pin drop for as long as it took us to finish our drinks
