Other than their political decisions I couldn't give a f*** what they get up to. And certainly not before they were even in politics/public life. I often hear this excuse when it comes to people in public life. You can't separate the decisions a man makes from the man himself. It's your character that determines the decisions you make. How can I respect, vote for or even like a man who is so weak minded as to be goaded into putting his p**** in an animal. I could never trust someone like that with the welfare of the country. When it comes to politicians having affairs etc, if a man can go home to his wife and family and lie to those who are closest to him, how can he then be expected to tell the truth to people he doesn't even know. And we complain about politicians saying whatever it takes for power. The country we live in reflects those we put in power. "Attitude reflects leadership". When we vote for these characters, we may as well put ourselves in the position of the pig.

I would think we are ALL guilty of that at some time in our lives especially when we were young. We are not all dressed in virgin white with a halo above our heads !

I think provided we're not actually doing something that directly restricts and harms others own capactity to make their own choices, we should largely be free to do as we please. Even if it putting our cock and balls into a dead pigs mouth (maybe drawing the line at a live pigs mouth, but that would likely end up with castration).

I would think we are ALL guilty of that at some time in our lives especially when we were young. We are not all dressed in virgin white with a halo above our heads ! I was, but at the time I was snorting cocaine of the back of a girl I was anally penetrating, who was dressed like a nun....

We can all do what we like most of the time, it's a free country but odd error of judgement! Trusting the wrong person is an error of judgement, or parking on a double yellow line when you know you could get a ticket, that's an error of judgement but committing a sex act with an animal, that IMO is not an error of judgement. You have to be of a certain mentality to do that. That is a character trait and one that shows a lack of self respect and if you don't respect yourself, how can you respect others. If your a rock star or someone who likes to go out with your mates, get hammered and do stupid things, fine but entrusting that person with the keys to the kingdom is not wise. The character of a politician is the foundation on which policy is built. For instance, What does it matter if someone has a policy that I agree with before an election but I know that they are not honest. Having an affair is an act of dishonesty. You can't be honest in one thing and dishonest in another. The best lies are always mixed with truth. Your either honest or your not. I could not abide Margaret Thatcher but I had to respect her. She had many qualities that made for a good leader and IMO if she had more empathy and compassion, she would have been great but the lack of those two qualities made her time in power hard on large sections of the people. The politicians we have had to vote for in the last few decades have been poor the say the least. At worst they are out and out liars, at best they show a lack of judgement and those out there that do have an obvious belief and commitment to their cause still don't have the right character to lead. For me voting is a serious matter. People die for the right to vote and can die because of the consequence of a vote. I'm sure we have all done things that we regret and people can change, of that I have no doubt but there is a difference between regretting something and regretting something because it has been exposed. I could no more vote for someone who, if true, committed such an act, as I could vote for someone who took the country to war on the basis of dishonesty and a desire for personal gain or esteem. That's just my opinion, I know not all will agree but when all we have to vote are the dishonest, the ill judged or the incapable we're in trouble. But we can all do what we want.

I'd say that the problem is assuming that something you did when you're twenty, is in anyway relevant to something you do now. I was a wild and reckless, irresponsible twenty something, but that doesn't mean now I'm in my 40s, I can't be trusted. I'm not that person anymore. Sure if you're still the same. But lets face it, the person we were when we were twenty is as good as dead by the time we hit late thirties and early forties.

I am certainly not the person I was when I was twenty. I did some silly things in my youth and we grow, learn and move on, hopefully and I actually don't assume that he is that same person. I have more of a problem with that whole boys club in particular and others like it. They have a long tradition of spawning those that go on the lead and it's almost like the type of behaviour you need to display to be part of that clique is a right of passage to future political aspiration. So in that context, I do see it as relevant to the type of politician we have in power today and over the last few decades if not longer. I sure that there are many more that have done much worse and without the excuse of youth and to be fair Dave does surprise me at times, I don't disagree with all that he does. I just think we can do so much better than what we have, right, centre or left and it starts first and foremost with the character of a person. If we keep voting for the some ole, same ole, we will get the same ole, same ole. Nothing will change and the proof of that for me is that nothing does change. The reason for that is that, we as an electorate don't change and quite frankly they have sussed us out. We vote red, blue, yellow, green first, instead of honest, integrity, belief, compassion and self respect. If those qualities do not get you into power, you have lies, deception, spin and self-interest that fill the gap. I must also add that this is not a left right thing for me, it goes across the political spectrum. When they say, "We are all in it together", they are just talking about themselves. Just my opinion. I do like your post though, it needed to be said.

You jest, but I have since become involved in Facebook spat (after posting something similar) with a dogmatic radical feminist nutjob friend of mine and her chums who think I am sexist and racist. When challenged to provide evidence, one of them said it was because my "subconscious associated interracial sex with bestiality". My subconscious! Thought police here we come. She and her mates would have an absolute field day on General Talk.
