Can someone enlighten me on this: why does everyone assume that when we find Alien life, it will be intelligent or even self aware? For only a miniscule fraction of earth's history have there been humans walking the earth. Mostly it's been bacteria or at best quadrupeds.
I honestly would like the answer to this question, it's not rhetorical.

If you mean when we first find it, i think it's more a hope that it will be advanced. It's the idea from the movies of making contact and communicating that fascinates us. In all likelihood it will be bacteria .

As for the Universe as a whole, it's a safe bet that there are thousands of civilisatians more advanced than us. It's sad that we're unlikely to ever know anything about them. 'Us' as in people alive now.

They don't.
But if we find it via some sort of communication then obviously it will have to have technology.

No one knows the probability of finding life full stop but most, I would imagine, just accept that it is out there somewhere, based on the fact that the Universe is so large and that it must have some degree of uniformity.

... and remember "communication" to us won't necessarily be the same to them.

It won't be like 'Independence Day' where Jeff Goldblum was able to hack into the alien's operating systems as they were using Window's 98.

Mind you we shouldn't underestimate Bill Gates' marketing reach!

It probably helps if we stop referencing really bad sci fi movies.

SETI has about as much chance of finding aliens as they do winning the lottery.
Random searching is next to useless. There has to be something more substantial to investigate.

Its a Dyson Swarm ! Thankfully, its 1500 light years away, which means it will take them a few minutes to get here once they notice us.

Hope we don't get sucked into it.

Well yes, the assumption is that it would only 'really be interesting' if it was intelligent and self aware. Of course its actually debatable in the first instance what is actually meant by intelligent and the degree to which humans self awareness exceeds that of other species. Most mammals display intelligence and self awareness when you compensate for humanocentric bias.
