one great album , but john squires stuff post stone roses was very meat and potatoes , which makes me think the early stuff was a one off , second album wasn't too inspiring either . I always think they just hit a sweet spot at the right time ,sample the hip hop staple " funky drummer" and riff over the top and you have an instant guitar/dance crossover , great idea in the first place though . and don't start me on joe blogs flares and f***in` tie dyed t shirts , appalling , im not that keen on the happy Mondays , always thought they were massively over rated , all dj remix production as far as I can see

interviewer " iggy , do you think you influenced anybody?"
iggy pop " I think I wiped out the 60`S "

Ian Brown can't sing for sh*t but that self-titled Stone Roses album is brilliant (as is Fools Gold).

I see your mate Guy Garvey has left Elbow Dan.

He was on Jools Holland's Later Live last week with his new band - I enjoyed it despite not being a fan of Elbow.

He's not left, just done a solo album in between Elbow albums. Fairly common these days for people to have side projects. And yes, I've enjoyed what I've heard too.

You like Elbow? They're almost as bland as Keane.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

You do amuse me Daniel....

Side projects have been commonplace since groups formed in the 50's with Buddy Holly being one of the most regular exponents.

Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford from Genesis were into their little deviations between albums in the 80's.

Hoping the T in the Park weekend falls on a week when I'm in Scotland as was there a couple of years ago and it was superb. The 'Roses headlining would be the cherry on the cake!

The can't sing accusation is a bit ridiculous.

You can argue alot of band's front men cannot sing. Liam Gallagher is a notable example. They are not polished crooners who would do a duet with Aretha Franklin. But they do have distinctive iconic voices which compliment the bands style and sets them apart. You wouldn't swap him for anyone else - it wouldn't work, if you put Michael Buble in it would sound awful

...it really isn't. He's the singer- and he can't sing. Not a question of the tone, quality, style of his voice.
The fact is he can't sing in tune with the music that the rest of the band is playing.

A good band that did one solid album & a decent b-sides album.

Love the Roses, seen them live, plus seen Ian Brown a few times, vocally he is poor, definitely has a voice for the studio. But nothing can be taken away from that 1st album, absolute corker. And even though it was a long wait, i thought the Second Coming was also a top album.
seeing Ian Brown walk out on stage to i wanna be adored, swinging his microphone was one of my favourite musical moments.....

Just when I thought that I was out...........they pull me back in

There is more to being a front man of a proper band that holding a note otherwise music is just full of boy bands and Xfactor.

The group as a whole were/are amazing and were transformed by Mani's arrival on bass who altered their sound (Reni has to be the coolest drummer of modern times) and for a couple of years they were untouchable until court cases and substance abuse. They didn't even bother putting Sally Cinnamon, Elephant Stone or Fools Gold (all singles) on the debut LP.

Brown as a frontman is the embodiment of cool and is a great lyricist (Pearl b****** always gives me goosebumps), he may not be a great singer but neither were John Lydon, Pete Doherty, Kurt Cobain or even Bob Dylan.

I usually don't say anything but whenever there is a Stone Roses thread the hack comment about not being able to sing always grates.

Nah come on, I love the Roses and I’m not too worried about polished vocals either, as you say plenty of music legends were never great singers but Ian Brown can be so out of tune, it’s unlistenable at times.

Still one of the great frontmen though!
