I've actually started to watch sh1t on BBC I wouldnt normally watch, only because it isnt interupted every 10 mins by some burton clad dick head trying to get me to use their (PPI, Injury claim, Pay day loan (only one million % interest) services, or sell me a house online.

I absolutley loathe adverts so the BEEB must stay as is.

All the best stuff is on Sky or streaming these days. We used to get comedy like Only Fools, Men Behaving Badly, Reeves & Mortimer, Alan Partridge, Big Train, The Fast Show, Absolutely Fabulous, Bottom and many more. Now it's Mrs Brown's Boys and Russell Howard's Good News. Utter load of bollocks.

I don't know how Mrs Brown's Boys every got on the air. I'd rather watch old Only Fools episodes.

The mentally incompetent deserve some programming too.

I think it's going to go. I agree with everyone here and think it's decent value for money but they're struggling to compete. There's already been talk at the beeb of scrapping the license and going subscription (which I think still negates the need for advertising).

As an aside though, there's word that they've been lying to us about their detector vans & equipment and none of it actually works. The beeb have confirmed that "detection" evidence has NEVER been presented during the prosecution of an alleged license fee evader.

So, adverts like the below were not only fabrications but created deliberately to scare us into buying their product. Aunties protection racket.

I think you may be right on this subject Superfly. Whilst working for a shop fitting firm & working away from home I got a visit from the TV detector people my lodger answered the door. Anyway long story short a few weeks later I'm at the magistrates court and while waiting to go in front of the beak I asked a girl coming out of the courtroom what fine she got? 400 quid was her answer. f***ing Hell I thought so when I went in I pleaded guilty to everything with my excuse being that I was working away from home & didn't have time to set up a direct debit with the bank. I then threw my 'curveball' saying the only thing I didn't agree with was that I had a Black & White TV rather than a Colour one. I got fined 35 quid !!!!

I've looked into this a fair bit recently* and (to put it very simply), if you don't incriminate yourself then there's nothing they can do. In the old days it was simple - you've got a telly, so cough up - but now there are so many exemptions that they literally have to get you to confess before they can take any action.

What you can do is either contact the Beeb & tell them you're exempt - they'll send someone round your house to check you're not wired up (which, let's be fair, is a liberty) & then put you on an exemption list for 2 years. Or, you can ignore the threatening letters and tell all the licensing goons that show up to go fuk emselfs. Which is possibly the more entertaining option. There's a growing trend of people filming there encounters with doorstep licensing goons and posting them onto YouTube. I recommend having a gander - some are hilarious

That's why I think the license days are numbered. There's more and more people exempt (or refusing to pay) and they're actually spending fortunes trying to track them down.

If anyone is thinking of doing this, then please do some research first. I'm no expert and there's a chance (if maybe you or a family have managed to incriminate yourself somehow), that any 'rebellious' action could exacerbate any legal proceedings. Also, I no way, shape or form condone not paying a license fee if you are legitimately receiving live broadcasts.

*I pay from my license, along with a Sky subscription, but I hardly bother watching any live broadcasts so I'm thinking of cancelling.

They changed the rules recently which have done away with most of the exemptions. Catch up now requires a licence.

I'd leave it as it is, for funding, but i'm all for getting rid of Eastenders (or anything else that has been going so long that it's become a gravy train) and shows they buy from other production companies, like the Voice was at a ridiculous cost.

Eastenders is effectively a 'welfare programme' for Adam Woodyatt. I bet he doesn't even bother with an agent anymore.

The changes happen next year apparently.

The government is also expected to legislate next year to close a loophole that allows people to avoid paying the licence fee if they only watch catchup television on iPlayer.

Cheers, I didn't know that. I'll keep an eye out.

I don't really watch much catch up either so I'll still have a think about it. I'd only ever really miss the odd sporting event/Palace game and the rare occasion I get home in time to see Eggheads.

They'd still have the same existing trouble in enforcing it though (ie, if you just tell them to bog off, there's not much they can do)

Confirmed now, may happen by July.

What are your views?

My view is that TMS would be much better if they got rid of Boycott and Tufnell.

Boycott is an anachronism and every time I hear Tufnell I am reminded of that time he was fielding on the boundary in Australia and someone shouted "Hey Tufnell, I'm building an idiot - can I have your brain"

Neither of them are the best of the team but I don't mind them. I wish they'd get rid of Alison Mitchell though, there just isn't the natural enthusiasm in her voice when a wicket is taken or a six hit etc.
