I hadn't realised how long the Watergate scandal took to unfold. Trump will be around for a while yet but I have little doubt he will be gone.

The Watergate break-in was in '72, the special prosecutor appointed and fired in '73, and Nixon resigned ahead of impending impeachment in August of '74.

Nixon, like Trump, was protected by a Republican Congress. Nixon's protection disappeared once Congressional Republicans realised that they were going to get killed dragging Nixon's dead carcass through the upcoming mid-term elections. Those elections were in November '74 - they turned on him 3 months ahead of them.

Back to today, Republicans are trying to ride this crazy train for as long as possible to get passed as much of their agenda as they can before they have to publicly execute Trump ahead of the mid-terms coming in November next year. The big difference, of course, is that Nixon's craziness was behind closed doors; Trump lets his freak flag fly high and proud in public.

At this point, the Republican agenda is stalled. They crashed through a Supreme Court nominee by blowing up centuries-old rules, and they arm-twisted the House to pass the Obamacare "repeal and replace" bill that is DOA in the Senate. There's no way the majority of these Congressional Republicans are going to push through anything else while Trump is flailing around the White House.

So, while Trump's impeachment is inevitable, he may be forcing the hands of Republicans to do it sooner rather later. That could give them the breathing room after the fallout to get some things passed by President Pence and to claim that “all is well” running into the November ’18 mid-terms. Of course, this would involve them working in Washington through the summer recess – something that they will be very reluctant to do (I wish I was being sarcastic here, but I’m not).

One last big difference between Nixon and Trump: Nixon was crooked but also a patriot. Trump is a grifter, out for himself only. He will not resign like Nixon. He will not go quietly. He will burn down the Republican party before he’s done. He may also nuke North Korea and/or Syria (again, I wish I was being sarcastic). Buy shares in pop corn manufacturers, because this is a summer blockbuster that will be the stuff of legend.

If the President is impeached the Vice President takes over. In this case that would be Mike Pence.

I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Pence was not found to be "advising" Trump throughout his erraticism so that he could step up when the President is ousted.

Pence is dangerously clever. Trump is the perfect stooge.

Pence looks smart because he stands next to Trump. He is a religious ideologue who will be a terrible President - i.e. far better than Trump. Think Bush but more churchy.

I do think he is complicit in Trump's actions, but I suspect that there will be a deal struck in Washington to take down Trump but leave Pence in place "for the good of the nation".

Also, if they ouster both, it's President Ryan and he's a whole nother story. He thinks he's smart and he thinks he's doing the right thing and he's very, very far from both of those things.

I think it was her ineptness that put data at potentially risk on a private server rather than deliberately supplying sensitive and confidential information to the Russians.

Although I am unaware what confidential information was stored on the server or whether it was solely the breaking of State IT security.

But it does nicely show Trump's double standards.

Well it certainly wasn't Intelligence Briefings for the president, which would include information the US Intelligence wouldn't share with its allies (UK, NATO etc), let alone Russian Diplomats (i.e. spies).

Indeed, Nixon also wasn't actually a s**t president either, especially foreign policy wise - Initiating the first arms reduction talks, opening the 'door to china' and ending the Vietnam war. Oddly, as well, Nixon also introduced 'a universal health care' for dialysis which the Government would pay for (at the time renal failure was the US biggest killer).

Personally, I think if he orders a all out attack on N Korea or deploying a nuclear weapon, and he'll be relieved of 'his command'.

I think it has to be a majority vote in the representatives, passed up into the senate. Its remarkably difficult.

In reality I think what will happen is that he'll have to testify, and in doing so is almost certain to commit perjury.

Of course Republicans wanted to impeach Clinton because he lied about getting his dick sucked by a young Intern....

Also, Nixon established the EPA, which Trump is trying to burn down.

Trump is just a nightmare about everything. After he went after the CIA, an anonymous official said that Trump "will die in jail." I am starting to believe that might actually happen.

I think rule 101 of politics, whether its democracy or tyranny, is don't pick a fight with your 'Intelligence Services'.

The Republicans will soon have to sacrifice him, if they don't want to end up unelectable.

He was the man who 'suspended' (ended!) Bretton Woods in '71. That was the day the s*** started.
A quick google shows how the central banks, now unshackled from the link to gold, started printing mega money (from thin air) at an ever increasing cost to all of us.
A cost that will continue long into the future until many many of us more wake up and smell the wood before the coffee trees........or something like that.

Let's not get too misty eyed about good ol Richard Milhous, the "not s***" president and "patriot".
As was written in the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2013

"This week saw the 100th birthday of America's 37th president, Richard Milhous Nixon.

With the benefit of hindsight, Nixon has one of the most remarkable political legacies of any figure in modern American history – winner of four national elections (as president and vice-presidential), on a presidential ballot every year but one from 1952 to 1972, and one of the most dominating political personalities of the second half of the 20th century.

Here was the man who "went to China", spurred détente with the Soviets, signed into law the establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), took America off the gold standard and ended the Vietnam war.

Of course, on the flip side, he also prolonged the Vietnam war, obstructed justice from the Oval Office, used the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to go after his political enemies, launched an illegal war in Cambodia, waged a dirty tricks campaign against his opponents, placed Spiro Agnew a heartbeat from the presidency, kept an "enemies list", was recorded in the Oval Office describing Jews as "aggressive, abrasive and obnoxious" and Italians as not having their "heads screwed on tight", ended the Vietnam war with neither peace nor honor, was impeached by Congress, resigned the presidency and left a permanent stain on American democracy … and those are just some of this greatest hits.

Oh, and also, he committed treason.

Now, that is not my description; rather, it reflects the view of President Lyndon B Johnson, who, in the final days of the 1968 presidential election, became convinced that Richard Nixon (who eventually won the race) and his campaign associates were working surreptitiously with the South Vietnamese government to obstruct peace talks between the US and North Vietnam. It is one of the most duplicitous and pernicious moments in Nixon's political career – which, considering his larger crimes, is really saying something."

Trump may be a whole sack of sh+t but that doesn't mean Nixon wasn't a piece..

Although I don't agree with his politics, my main problem with Trump is he is a fraud. He's never been a "great" businessman, most of his accomplishments are really his father's. His Atlantic City casinos are all bankrupt and are being torn down.

Republicans, especially in Congress, are starting to realize that they can move their conservative agenda forward with VP Pence in charge a heck of a lot easier than with Trump. With him, they never know what the story is. He has undercut his press office, his Justice Department and the National Security Council with his intemperate statements that contradict what they have said. The one non-issue that is being made an issue is the so-called leaking of classified information to the Russians in the Oval Office. The President is the final authority concerning the classification of documents and who has access to such information, short of nuclear related material which is classified No Foreign Release (NOFORN).

Even Ann Coulter is having second thoughts about him and she is to the right of Atilla the Hun.
