When I was a student, in higher education, the bette noir of the NUS was psychologist Hans Eysenck, for his frankly risible views on race and intelligence. But by disrupting his lectures and refusing to allow debate with him on academic premises, the NUS made themselves look like, in my view, a facist organisation. Better that such views be shown for what they are by reasoned argument than by attempting to suppress them. That is not to suggest that either Tatchell or Greer are in any way similar to Eysenck.

Its very much the same. Eysenck wasn't racist, his research led some people to reject it on the grounds that the conclusion supported a racial argument. What did come out of social psychology in response of Eysenck were new approaches in Social Psychology that revolutionised psychology. Eysenck himself wasn't overly happy with the conclusions of his research either, and argued that irrespective of the relationship he uncovered between education, race and IQ, that even though it was not cost effective to follow these conclusions, that society had a duty to try.

The problem of the 'shout the loudest' is the endanger research and investigation, that results in change and development. I get protesting someone who is an ardent campaigner such as an avowed Neo-Nazi holocaust denier (someone promoting a cause irrespective of evdience), but not someone who is promoting discourse.

And even then, Thatchall is right, don't shout them out, attack them on stage on the facts. You won't make the BNP look stupid by calling them racist, get them on economic policy or how they will implement certain impossible policies in law.

The irony is that Tatchell is a defender of free speech, one of the few people who speak on the subject who is worth listening too.

I don't believe for a minute Tatchell is guilty of what he is accused of here.

To be honest Matt as soon as I read "student accuses...." i made the assumption (correctly) that he/she is an uptight fcuktard who deserves all the attention one would give an errant child, i.e. none.

Tatchell is a nasty vindictive little man who likes to bully people. Would love to punch his lights out.

But he is entitled to an opinion. As is everyone.

Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one, and they stink. I generally don't trust people on the basis of their opinions, or entitlement, but on how they back them up.

Perhaps, but talking bollocks is not a crime and having a "stupid" opinion is purely subjective as you might say.
One can be factually incorrect of course but given how people interpret "facts" to suit their argument then even that appears to be questionable. Therefore backing up an opinion is not as simple as it might appear since people only see reality as they want to and not as it is.

I heard her say that and admired her courage to say it.

She had balls (but the irony was lost on the LBGT faction who have no sense of humour).

We now have the laughable situation of what to do with these people when they break the law and go to Jail.

The recent case of the tranny in Bristol nick who complained the other inmates shouted "show us your tits" then was transferred to a woman's nick to be met with shouts of "Show us your cock!"

Tis a strange world we live in these days.

It's always been hard to be different. There are always the morons of this world who wish to gang up on others to appear one of the in crowd. I suspect prison is one of the worst places for such behavior. I don;t think it is ever going to be easy to be in a small minority in any environment.

That sums up the real loonies. Those who deduce that you must support anyone who you allow to have an opinion.

Was reading today about Stephen Fry and gay misogyny. Surely it's a greater sign of support if you ignore peoples prejudices. But it's widely implied there are certain criteria for being able to take offence at such things.

“Everyone is in favour of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage.”

Really?

Well I'd say that it is everyone's right to express an opinion in response to another but that is not the same as abusing and bullying them because you don't like what they say. Unfortunately some people don't seem to know the difference and are only ever interested in playing the man or evoking the straw man argument.

If you've ever attended university, as a leftie, then invariably you'll have the horror that is the run in with the 'Student Unionistas' types. Its almost a psychiatric disorder among young people who read a book on feminism or Marxism, where in they suddenly decide they're the source by which the world will change and that they are the 'new cause - Problem is they typically have read a few books, a phamplet or two and wiki'd the lunatic fringe - Its much easier to read the Scum Manifesto, than to read Social Theory of Gender.

There's some truth contained within that exaggeration I'd say...and I speak as someone of "the left" who (shock horror) was on the student union executive! ...though as welfare secretary, actually spending most of my time trying to do legit things related to issues on campus and students' "problems".

The NUS exec member who refused to appear on a platform with Tatchell is IMO abhorrent. But,as NG has posted, being someone who is on "the left" is not the same as "the left" per se being like that.Bonkers views aren't confined to one part of the political spectrum and its to be hoped some posters will be as quick to post negatively when the idiot is (as they frequently are) of "the right".

In retrospect, the only thing worse than the earnest leftie hacks at uni arguably were the "rugger bugger" young tories

I have a lot of time for Tatchell.Lived in the vicinity when he ran for parliament in the early 80's in Bermondsey and he was subjected to the most vile dumb homophobia (arguably stoked up by the local Liberal party)and stock inane anti-leftie slagging rubbish.Stuck to his principles and chose them over seeking fame and fortune, unlike so many politicos of all persuasions.
