Thanks to everyone who signed the petition. It will pass 500,000 signatures within the next few hours and is on track to become the most signed petition to date. Not bad for a few mums (including my wife) who joined a Facebook Group when expecting December 2013 babies of whom little Faye was one.
Everyone concerned appreciates there are many calls upon the health service budget but with all new borns now entitled to the vaccine the catch programme if extended to all under 11s would be a quantifiable and finite cost.
With the media all over this news item (albeit invariably getting factual elements of the sad story wrong) hopefully Parliament will have a meaningful debate with a view to extending the catch up programme.

Thanks again everyone and if you haven't signed the petition and have a few spare moments please do.

However the cost of the vaccine is presently very high, something like a cost effective price of 80 quid per vaccination, which is why its problematic to vaccinate broadly, even if it would be ideal (long term it would almost eliminate Men B in teenagers - the primary carrier of the disease).

In truth, things like this I believe are more worthy of government spending, than commercial interests such as the assorted rail links.

It would be interesting to see the cost comparisons between that of vaccinating all children up to 11 yo, and that of the cost to the NHS of treating say even 3% of those for a stay of several weeks in ITU. Probably cheaper in the long term to do the vaccinations!

Becky- one of the campaigning mums is a nurse and she is going to find out the cost to the NHS of treating an infected child.

By my rough calculation there would be approximately 7 million children to be brought into the catch up programme.

As ever it will be a cost benefit analysis I guess

At the cost of £300 each quoted on the BBC news today that would come to £2,100,000,000

The lunchtime news also said that there are severe shortages of the vaccine

I think £300 is the cost charged by private clinics so presumably the cost to the NHS would be less but it is still a huge expense which ever way you look at it

According this BBC report from December 2012, the daily cost of a paediatric care unit bed was in the region of £2,000 per day!

Presumably that is just the bed and staff costs, so 2-3 weeks at that cost then add medication, physiotherapy, drugs etc. and it soon racks up a pretty large bill - even without allowing for the ongoing life costs for those children who are (tragically) seriously affected by this illness - prosthetic limbs, social care payments, housing costs etc.

Surely vaccination is the better option.

Signed.

I caught this when I was a baby (1962). I was told it was touch and go for quite a while and I ended up having 2 lumbar punctures (thankfully I don't remember having these). For years afterwards my parents, via advice given by the doctor, insisted that I take a tonic called Minadex (I'm guessing advice may have changed over the years).

At £2.1b it is a very expensive option and according to BBC news we are already far ahead of any other country in the world in what we already do and really can't see the Government authorizing such an expensive vaccination program without raising taxes to pay for it.

I do have a personal interest in this disease as my eldest son contracted meningitis when he was three which left him profoundly deaf as he lost all of his hearing

When we can afford to give away £11.8 billion in overseas aid, it's peanuts!
