It seems that people like you cannot tolerate real democracy in action and just want your own way, threatening mayhem if you don't get it.

He did honour the result, which he profoundly disagreed with, by resigning and allowing the Tories to choose a new leader to sort out the mess. A mess that they had created with the intention to quieten the Eurosceptics for good and consign UKIP to history. It went wrong. A referendum can too easily be hijacked by lies, timing and the winds of chance to be a reliable way to determine what the country really wants, let alone what is in it's best interests.

What people say on the stump should always be taken with a whole packet of salt. Just look at what was on that Leave campaign bus.

Cameron is now just setting the record straight and letting the people know the truth. His publishers are the one's deciding the timing.

100% bulls*** just as I expected!!

I assume that when you say that Cameron is "letting the people know the truth" what you really mean is that Cameron is "giving readers his opinion" which is somewhat different

Don't you agree that it can be the case that sometimes things just have the ring of undeniable truth to them?

When, as in this case, we all witnessed the events ourselves, if not in person but on screen and in print, this is supported by the evidence of our own eyes and ears it makes it doubly the case that what Cameron has written seems very much more than just his opinion.

So whilst some might wish to just dismiss it as the sour grapes of someone seeking to wash his own damaged reputation, because that suits their own approach, others will not.

The timing is obviously deliberate and this is either because the publishers think it will sell more books and/or that Cameron is as opposed to the current direction of the government as most MPs are.

Those who are in either of the convinced camps won't be swayed by this. I already thought Johnson to be a chancer taking advantage of a situation for his own benefit, and not that of the country. What matters is that group in the middle who are capable of swinging. It's become smaller in the last 3 years but is likely to get bigger again in the coming months.

Cameron saying these things, in this way and at this time, with the ring of truth surrounding it, could make a difference. I hope so myself.

Got time for Michael Gove, I think he has a bit of talent - but pre referendum you can theorise, post referendum you have to deliver. This means doing things your centrist, bit liberal core finds difficult - but this is politics, it's what they are supposed to do.

"I'd rather be backing a character and a leader who is the Hulk than one who is on the Chicken Run, as Jeremy Corbyn is."

This is actually the Brexit Minister, Stephen Barclay.

The only thing that Leavers and Remainers agree on is what a total c**t David Cameron is he let down both sides badly. He has the nerve to criticise Boris but at the first sign of something not going his way he gives up and hides in his shepherd's hut.

He very briefly used to be my MP! I met him once. He didn't impress me. Compared to the previous incumbent, Malcolm Moss, who was a decent and helpful local MP, Barclay appeared to be just another career politician.

Cameron carries the can but the decision to hold the referendum, which now looks such a stupid one in hindsight, was not his alone.

It was backed by the Party, the Cabinet, the government and Parliament.

Having backed Remain he did the decent thing and stood aside so that a new PM could be chosen to see the thing through. That that effort has hit the rocks isn't his fault.

I am not excusing him for failing to realise that a referendum of that sort was always going to create a huge crisis. I argued against it at the time but was in a tiny minority back then and wiser heads in the back rooms ought to have been giving strong advice.

Well there is a resemblance between us and we are certainly on the same wing of the Conservative Party! But there the similarity ends for he is top-watt clever, an erudite luminary with articulation and an aura of grandiloquence I could never match.
