Tell me Maple, which generation didn't take the advantages offered to them?

They all do.

Who voted in the politicians?

You are too young to remember, it was blindingly obvious at the time that short-term self interest was the name of the game.

In 1957 we were told

"Indeed let us be frank about it - most of our people have never had it so good.

"Go around the country, go to the industrial towns, go to the farms and you will see a state of prosperity such as we have never had in my lifetime - nor indeed in the history of this country."

The main issue was how to maintain growth and employment but keep prices steady - what he called the "64,000-dollar question".

His answer was to increase production in a combined operation involving not just the government but also industry and the public.

"What we need is restraint and commonsense - restraint in the demands we make and commonsense on how we spend our income."

Sadly the point was not taken.

Populations are fed the options available to them. It's hardy their fault that the system isn't quite designed to produce the best meritocratic leaders.

The lowering of standards doesn't lie at the feet of social conservatives.

Every generation acts in what they perceive is their own best interests. Everyone feathers their own nest first.....perceptions of ethics are self comforts...It's easy to be generous when you can afford it.

Maybe

But what about e.g. veganism? I know from personal experience that the younger generation is more socially responsible than the oldest generations.

So veganism is more noble than CND? There is no difference, each generation gets fed the information of their times and a percent act on it.

Different year, same outcome.....to be polite.

Same genes, same people.

Ah, so you lose social responsibility progressively as you get older.

You should lose the right to vote as soon as you get a bus pass. The two are mutually exclusive.

Good idea as on the basis of no taxation without representation I would happily give up voting and paying tax

The youth only have what they have because of that older generation. This is the fifth largest economy in the world. Our youth won the frigging lottery being born here and having that older generation...most of whom worked sodding hard and paid god knows how much tax.

Sure, the baby boomers took all that was available to take....just like every generation before them and just like every generation to come.

I agree that politicians can be criticised.....but you don't blame the sheep, you blame the Shepard.

Though I'd imagine we'd differ on the Shepard.

Well, yes. As the father of a shepherd I am concerned that a teacher doesn't know the spelling. Just proves how divorced society is from its food production.

There is a difference though. You get the Government you encourage and vote for. That is not the same with shepherds. The sheep constantly call to bar the shepherds, yet still they keep coming back.

People voted e.g. for Thatch and encouraged her in her 'reforms'. Then, boo hoo, all that extra money that came their way through reduced controls somehow becomes tainted because it was made as a result of a lack of controls. Fancy that.

Really,we had paper bags recycled glass bottles.no so many cars,we used public transport more.

I love it when young people blame old people for all their woes.

If it wasnt for old people like my father they wouldn't have the things they have now.

And before the usual suspects start giving it large,I have 4 children ranging from on 24_38.

always a Norwood boy, where ever I live.

Do you seriously believe that people change from one generation to the next?

Darwin would have been very interested in your ideas.

Nurture teaches and nature determines what you do with it.

When kids are little they believe in Father Christmas. We told them he was real.
A bit later, some believe in God and then the CND. People with self interest tell them it is true.

People also tell them that going 'green' will save the planet. It won't, and the planet will be here long after we are gone anyway.
Most of us wake up and realise that it was all nonsense. Others never progress past the mental age of 14.

When it comes to voting, I don't want people deciding my future who recently discovered that Father Christmas is really Dad.
