As more than half voted against the Tories in December that works both ways.

In round terms we have an almost equally divided nation for which the ONLY resolution is compromise.

Those in favour of the EU have been trying to find ways to satisfy those who aren't for decades, with opt outs and rebates. A soft Brexit would have done the trick now.

Declaring victory and wanting to celebrate is not helping anyone. Including yourselves.

Not really (well in the real world anyway) as the 48% vote was in a 2 horse race,

I don't discuss politics in the open in the pub. There is a time and place for everything. Quietly with my friends who take the same stance as me sometimes.

The landlady is a Brexiteer and we have had several good private conversations which have always ended up with her saying "you've got good points, but I won't change my mind". Which seems to be the typical response I get from most Brexiteers I have personal chats with.

Have you ever considered that she may just want to keep your custom? Why you frequent a pub which is run by a thick racist baffles me

Not needed.

There are many who are seriously deluded posting here. I am a lonely outpost of common sense by comparison.

Indeed anyone who continues to believe that Brexit is a good idea has to fall into that category. When all the evidence shows we would be much richer and safer staying within the EU and our future outside is based on wishes and hopes, that has to be an almost textbook definition of delusion.

Maybe in a few years you will look back and say "he was right you know".

Well at least it wasn't a black cab driver. "I had that Nigel Farage in the back of the cab the other day..."

You really haven't got a clue!

I didn't say otherwise.

However, there was plenty of polling evidence in the months before the election that should another referendum be held the balance had shifted to remain. There were enough MPs in the last Parliament who were in favour of holding one for that to have become a reality if only Corbyn had not been so damn stupid, or allowed his own personal opinions and ambitions to intrude. Johnson's advisers took a gamble that would happen and it paid off.

The fact remains that it seems highly probable that more people today (and not back in 2016 when we all knew so much less) favour remaining than leaving. It's also true that many people are simply tired of the arguments and fell for a "catch phrase". Such is the downside of populism.

Jane is no racist!

She is a decent, friendly and well mannered publican who serves good food and better company. She does though, by her own admission, have a sketchy knowledge of politics. For instance she thinks that after the end of this month there won't be any "foreign" trawlers landing fish in Cornwall. She is a typical "we need to change something" voter who always seem to think the grass next door must be greener.

A bit like buying a new striker and finding out he isn't as good as the ones we already have. It boosts the moral of a few for a while but is bound to end in tears.

Please see my reply to cpfc_chap above.

Add to that that only 72% of those eligible voted. That 18% could have made all the difference as there was, in my opinion, significantly more apathy in the remain camp than in the fully motivated leave one.

It was a split vote then and it remains split today. Split right down the middle. You cannot manage a country which is so divided by supporting only one of those views. You need to search for common ground and compromise.

But she voted to leave! There you go again

I think you mean 28%. So do you know how that 28% would have voted? If there was apathy in the remain camp, tough s***, they shouldn't have been so arrogant. Similarities to the Democrats during last Presidential elections

And to be fair, we mocked them for being the utter f***ing morons they were and still are to this day.

I am rather flat about January 31st if I am honest. I don't trust Johnson to truly deliver the sort of clean break Brexit I want and whilst our departure at the end of the month is something to cheer on, the reality is that this country is still divided in a way that threatens our basic understanding of what the UK is.

I genuinely struggle on a variety of levels to comprehend how so many people, who will happily proclaim themselves as substantially brighter than almost every Leave voter, could be so monumentally stupid with their stance on trying to make the British public vote again on the Brexit issue and essentially handing a moron like Johnson a majority to do what he wants. Remoaners truly are political retards because all the basic facts pointed to this happening and yet still they proclaim themselves as being 'right'. Stupidity on a level that is difficult to get your head around.

If those idiots could have stopped Brexit from happening then we would have had to put up with them rubbing our faces in it for months and I refuse to stoop to their level. We won on June 23rd 2016 and the fact that is has taken us until January 31st 2019 for that to be made reality is truly shameful. History will not judge these Remain Retards very well.

I expect to experience a grim satisfaction come January 31st but beyond that...nah. This battle is won but the war is not over by a long way.

These Progressive b******s have not gone away. And have shown that they have zero respect for democracy. They might look like w***ers individually but collectively they represent a truly authoritarian risk to us all.

There is so much wrong with this post that it's impossible to to know where to start. So I will only comment on the one thing you have got right. Everything else is totally wrong.

You are though dead right that whilst a battle has been lost the war is very far from over. Why on earth would you expect anything else? Farage was already announcing his determination to continue his fight back in 2016 when the early exit polls indicated that remain had "won".

Chuck out the insults. Misrepresent the motives. It won't make the slightest difference. The battlefield has been redrawn and new weapons need to be sharpened and made ready so a period of rest and recuperation is needed. Those doing the planning are already grouped together watching how things develop and probing for weaknesses. Time is on the side of those with the best arguments. When reality strikes ours will be ready and the people will listen.

In the real world or just in yours? The election result suggests different. You sound like the Labour MPs who cant admit that their party had got it completely wrong
