Why are the left still playing this card?

I agree and if people read the last paragraph:

"The Home Office said there had been “no change to the rights and status of EU nationals in the UK as a result of the referendum”. Its guidance was that EU citizens did not need to apply for permanent residence. “As such there is no requirement to register for documentation to confirm their status,” a spokesperson said."

Enough said.

The statement is true...but its carefully worded..it reflects the position now when we are in the EU and nothing has changed...what it doesn't say (because it couldn't truthfully at this time) is that that will be the score the moment we Brexit...which explains the perfectly predictable and natural rush

Enough said.

"The Lib Dems overturned an enormous Conservative majority to beat the former mayoral candidate in a by-election defined by Brexit"

I thought you guys believed the voice of the people was legitimate and should be taken note of?.

Some potential common sense, at last, from the Brexit camp. We will have to pay 'rent' to the EU to have access to single market should it go down that route but at least Brexiteer Davis is not being emotive, illogical and hard about it.

You did not read into the complete article and understand what was being said. NOTHING is in concrete yet and will not be for a while yet.

I agree that the voice of people should be heard.

However, this by election victory, just like the referendum vote, cannot be centred on one cause or reason, as much as certain people would like to do that.

The causes of this result do include Brexit, Zac Goldsmith for the second time in recent history deploying a terrible strategy, Zac Goldsmith's general unpopularity, a very good campaign by the Lib Dems and the Heathrow expansion.

Interesting result in the by-election last night. I have a couple of remain friends who have joined the Lib Dems as they consider themselves to now be "single policy voters" and the Lib Dems are the only ones offering to reverse the brexit plan.

If they can effectively mobilise the 48% to do similar, it could be a very interesting next general election.

Interesting times indeed

I agree with this, i too have a few tribal tory friends saying the same thing. They voted tory historically because of the perception of lower taxes and better with the economy. They say the latter has been blown out of the water and the tories have morphed into UKIP. It does mean however there will be no snap general election as TM must sense now she could lose

Labour changed from weak remain to leave thus the door wide open to capture the 48% before an election enough to win by a mile.

Thats a huge amount of people and they may well be not for turning, the question is tho what organisation do the lib.dems have? My labour vote will be going there labour out of touch with reality.

Really? You should know by now that politicians know almost no limits when seeking votes.
The methods employed by both sides in the referendum would be better forgotten about.

People want control over European immigration and anything less will be seen as a betrayal. It would also spell disaster for the left at the next election.

Remain voters do not beat up innocent europeans in the streets out of control leave thugs do.

As others have pointed for immigration paranoia people like you the figures for non-eu immigration are much higher and the govt. does not have to refer to the eu at all to reduce them.

They are not going to of course.

Some of the left, a significant portion of the left voted for Brexit, otherwise the referendum would have been very different.

Brexit isn't a left vs right thing.
