On which note what do you make of the intervention of the Dutch Deputy Prime Minister suggesting they will veto a Brexit agreement which allows the UK to be a low-tax venue for corporations and the mega-rich?

[Link]

Seems to be something which both sides agree is a problem - the elites playing states off against each other and stuffing the workers.

Some reasonable views on migration too.

Wonder what the other 26 countries will be vetoing brexit over.

It wouldn't be any higher as these rises have nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with the “bailouts” and quantitative easing projects, a never-ending river of currency created (out of thin air) and pumped into companies for near zero interest.
It was these free loans that allowed companies to purchase their own stocks through stock buybacks thus reducing the number of existing stocks on the exchanges and artificially boosting the price of the remaining stocks.
This has caused the stock market to skyrocket but it does nothing to help the economy at all, it just papers over the cracks.

Some banks received 'bailouts' and they have been among the worst performing FTSE sectors. The best performing sector in the FTSE during the last year has been the mining sector and they received no 'bailouts'.

I am not a 'corbynista' but IMO a private company is precisely that and we should end all handouts whether by taxation or subsidies that they receive.

They should be contributing to society not the other way round.

I'll lie down for a while phew!

I know

You've obviously done some homework, well done (i honestly mean that). Do some more, delve a bit deeper, and you'll learn that the FTSE isn't really the be all and end all bud.

I more or less agree with you on that. However, I think the Labour government under Brown had no option but to bail the failing banks out in an unprecedented situation. Otherwise they risked an economic meltdown with mass-bankruptcies of companies and individuals and mass-unemployment that would have seriously threatened the social stability of the country.

A shame criminal charges or a ban from working in the sector couldn't have been brought upon those responsible. (as was done in Iceland) Instead we have pretty much the same people who facked up before.

You need to listen to Jim Grant and his take on the recession, early 1920's, that cured itself with no Central bank influence.
More homework, but it's worth it.

Edit: It puts the constant bailing out of the banksters (that WE pay for) into perspective.

No country has a "veto" on Brexit. They don't even have a "veto" on the Article 50 withdrawal agreement. It is subject to qualified majority voting.

...and incidentally:

The vision of a low-tax Britain that enforces fewer regulations in terms of workers’ rights on businesses has been a motivating force for a number of high profile Brexit supporters.

What utter tosh. Because "low-tax" is synonymous with "fewer workers rights"? Jesus, the quality of Graun editorial just keeps plunging. You can see the bearded sandal-wearers spitting out their granola in outrage, as they tenuously try to make the link themselves, their neurons weakly sputtering to life in the left-side of their skulls.

Skim down, and you can really hit Graun-bingo: "xenophobia", "Corbyn", "LGBT" among other gems. Pathetic.

Anyone who seriously believes that a Tory Government will protect either employment rights or environmental protection really should think of doing an accumulator on the Lotto and Euromillions because you've a better chance of winning on that than you have of the former.

Anyone who believes that there will be much employment around to have rights about under a Corbyn government shouldn't bother to do the Lottery as the currency will be pretty worthless too.
