British rail was s**t before privatisation but the government were accountable for it, now its s**t and expensive after privatisation, and some remote corporate shareholder boards are accountable to the government.

True, but then private companies also don't deliver the same kind of accountability that government agencies have to, as they're accountable to the electorate as well as law. As a rule I think Business tends to be more efficiently organised that government agencies - but that their employees (until recently) are generally worse off in terms of their jobs, and usually they're the ones who are accountable for business failures, or the desire to raise the share value (not all redundancy is about 'cutting losses'). I do think that a percentage of the civil service is basically an outreach charity program for about 20-25% of its employees - who'd never cope outside of the civil service (having 'serious issues' that no private employer would take a risk on). Government agencies are accountable to the public - every four to five years, as the head of the department can be voted out of office. You don't get that for a CEO... Yeah Private Companies tend to be more efficient - but in terms of Employees, traditionally they get a better deal (decent wage, good pension, 'job for life', good training, promotion prospects etc even at the bottom end as an AO). You'd don't get that working in Tesco.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |
