Going back to the best rather than the ones perved over, the best has to be Peter Clements, the headmaster at WInterbourne Boys back in the 70's.

Absolute gent of a man, knew every pupil by name and even looking back now, took an active interest in how his school ran, how the staff were and how his pupils suceeded.

Giles Robertson, the head of Greenvale Primary Schhol, Selsdon was a good-hearted man.
Mr Angier, a history teacher at Bec Grammar was inspirational, but Mr Scrowston the PE & games teacher was sadistic unless you were good at games and/or brave.
I'd advise anyone against going into teaching, incidentally. It has too much paper-work and nonsense these days. Teachers work 72 hour weeks, and the holidays are stuffed with preparation and data-handling. My advise would have been different 10 years ago.
