Is there anybody now posting who were ardent supporters of The Palace during the nineteen sixties when Cliff Holton played for us while Dick Graham was Manager and Arthur Waite was Chairman? If so could you please explain the following mysteries?: Why did Graham sell Holton to Leyton Orient and then why did Waite fire Graham when the manager was ill in bed? I have tried many times to get the truth about these happenings but have always drawn a blank. Thanks a lot!.

I was around but sorry I don't know either answer. One thing I do know though is that there's no E in Wait.

Cliff Holton was 36 when he left Palace so maybe that's one reason - and he went to Watford and then Charlton before ending his career at Orient aged 38.

Never heard the other story before.

Yes, big Cliff was getting on a bit. Having said that, bringing in the podgy Derek Kevan, and the underwhelming Ian Lawson, as replacement strikers was hardly a nod to the future. Holton did score 17 goals in 64-65 which was a better return than we got from Kevan who netted 5 times, and Lawson 6, in 65-66. In retrospect perhaps another season from Cliff would have been better.

As for Dick Graham being sacked whilst ill in bed -- well Graham was known for being a bit of a hard man so perhaps Wait considered it less likely that he'd receive a blooded nose if Dick was immobile.
