If he was going to reign on principle then he should have resigned years ago. IDS was one of the nastiest c***s in a cabinet full of them. I hope this takes Osborne down too.

He either resigned on principle (in which case why now, rather than the other hardships he and his government have forced on the poor and disabled over the past 6 years?) or is jostling for position in an anticipated leadership contest. Has any politician been elected leader of his party, been forced out, then become leader again over a decade later? Very odd.

Could be wrong but Churchill? I think Churchill was voted out in 1945 but stayed leader of the Conservatives in opposition until re-elected. Even then, he was only out of office for 5 or 6 years. IDS will have been, what, 15 years out of the leadership assuming a new Tory leader by 2020?

IDS has clearly used disability cuts to stoke the fire for Brexit campaign. Given how it is turning into open offensive against Cameron & company , IDS was never going to keep his job within The Cabinet. I expect Gove; Villiers etc to eventually fall upon their swords as well.

He resigned over a matter of principles relating to the cuts in disability benefits (he didn't take responsibility for those cuts) or to further the Brexit cause, whichever you wish to chose. 'Falling on their sword' is when an individual takes responsibility for a group mistake. Please remember that next time you are teaching in order that children can be taught correctly.
