Jacko was my first Palace hero. His penalty save from Francis Lee early 72/73 season was amazing. Legend.

Jacko was indeed a great goal keeper for Palace.

Fearless, he came for all crosses and would get clattered most games.

At his prime he had the face of a pro boxer.

I've also heard the story that he chinned big Mal so obviously had the punch to go with the face.

I too think Jacko was a fantastic keeper and of course came after another great, Bill Glazier. I reckon Nige would just about shade it over him though. Much as I love Jules he isn't nearly as good.

I remember Jackson being referred to more than once as the best English keeper never to play for England. I also recall a newspaper article about him (Croydon Advertiser probably), in which he talked about how hard he found sleeping the night after a match, and would wander round the house reliving every moment of the game and working out whether he could have dealt better with situations.

And what about Roy Bailey? I saw him when I started watching Palace in 1953, but, not surprisingly, I can't even remember what he looked like, let alone his performances. But he was too good for Palace and soon left the Third Division South for higher things (namely, Ipswich). Son Gary played for Manchester United.

JRW2,
You must have started following Palace around the same time as me.You no doubt remember Ray Potter and Vic Rouse as goalies. For years we were always fortunate to have really safe hands between the sticks. Jacko is without doubt my Palace No1 keeper. I can remember him saving two penalties away at Coventry maybe in 1969, however both had to be retaken as he allegedly moved early, resulting in concedes.I think the penalty taker was Neil Martin.

I started watching Palace in 1963... Jacko was reserve keeper behind Glazier but took over in 1964 I think.

was a reliable keeper, never got injured even though he was brave, diving at forwards feet.

I liked him, he made me feel that Palace weren't going to concede a goal if he was playing.

Defo one of `our greatest keepers compared to the long list I've seen since 1963.

If there was a 'Mount Rushmore' of Palace goalkeepers he would certainly be included.

Left us to join L.Orient, signed by George Petchey and Petchey later signed him for Millwall.

Vic Rouse is particularly prominent in my memory, probably because of the excitement and pride we all felt when he got his one and only cap for Wales - the first player from the old 4th Division to win an international cap. I recall someone mentioning on this site a couple of years ago that Vic lived at Crown Point and that locals travelling early to a home game would find themselves on the same 68 bus as the great man. Seems unthinkable now.

Yes, how times have changed.

In general PL players have no particular allegiance to their respective clubs. It is just a job for which they are paid handsomely and just treat it as a temporary stop before they move to pastures new. And don't get me on to all that "Loyalty" stuff !

For what it's worth...

1. Jackson
2. Martyn
3. Speroni

This is Jacko when we got a late equaliser at West Ham in 1972, thanks to Dave Payne's shot that went in off the post. Something like that today would be useful.

In fact when Glazier was transferred Dick Graham bought in Tony Millington as a replacement. However, Jacko fairly quickly demoted him to 2nd choice.

Mate, that was my first game and I still remember that penalty save!!

Here's a picture I took of the great man at Speroni's testimonial. I wanted to go shake his hand but he left before I had a chance. I did get to shake Jules's hand though!!
