If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

That is why him being magnanimous must be all the more galling for them.

Now it makes no difference with Prem wages FOR ONE SEASON unless a Mike Ashley makes a business decision and holds his nerve for a season which I expect him to do as a businessman after spending quite a lot of cash, albeit after spending the lowest of nearly all Prem clubs for a while (net). Edited by Rudi Hedman (11 Apr 2016 1.00am) In Ashley's case, since he seems to operate on the premise that the football club operates as a money maker for his sporting goods business, relegation will deny him the international marketing platform that the Premier League represents. Plus, Benitez has an opt out clause and players like Mitrovic and Wijnaldum may very have relegation clauses in their contracts and may force transfers. Same with Shelvey. While gate receipts are no longer the be all and end all financially, relegation may encourage dissident supporter groups like AshleyOut.com (the same folks as PardewOut.com) to intensify their efforts for an economic boycott of the club. They are already producing alternate kitwear in order for Tooners to avoid buying from Ashely's SportsDirect. AP may feel a sense of loyalty to him for hiring him when his career was in limbo but overall an owner like Ashley who runs a football club as part of a conglomerate doesn't work in sports. One of the worst periods in the history of the New York Yankees is when CBS owned them between 1965 and 1972. They went from a championship team to cellar dwellers and were lucky relegation doesn't exist over here. Villa is a somewhat different story. Their board room is a mess as Lerner has proven to be an "Ugly American." They need the club to be sold as soon as possible just to get stability. Then they need to find a manager who they will stick with for more than five minutes. If that happens, I expect to see them come back up than a club like Newcastle. It may be that Ashley sells, especially if he can buy another top division club in England or Scotland (see his attempt to take over Rangers).

I agree about Newcastle.... but still hold out a bit of "hope" for Sunderland. Fat Sam has them operating as a unit and look much more accomplished than Newcastle do (even with Rafa's help!) It's a big game next week and if Norwich win it, then it's curtains for Sunderland, but I'd wait for that result before committing myself. I wasn't that impressed with Norwich at ours and can see Sunderland possibly getting all 3 points next week.

Everyone talks about Leicester's potential league win being great for the Premier League, but this season could also be a good year for football if all of the promoted clubs stay up. I don't feel passionately either way for Norwich, Watford, Bournemouth, Villa, Sunderland or Newcastle but for the three promoted clubs to stay up does at least make the gulf seem a bit smaller for a while. That said, I think it has been down to it being one of the poorest quality Premierships since it began.

Can't wait to see the look on Shelvey's face ( not a pretty sight at the best of times ) when relegation is confirmed. The Spanish Waiter will be off, so they will need to recruit a new manager, one that knows the Championship. Good luck with that one. As for Sunderland, if they go down they do have a manager that could get them back up. Whether Fat Sam fancies the job is another matter. I'd quite like Norwich to stay up as it's an easier away game for us.
