Ironic, that if you put out a vote for abolishing the monarchy, it would, be a close vote, but, if you suggested replacing it with a republican structure, it would fail. Just like it did in Australia. Obviously, if the public wanted it, not just because. Republic/democracy, don't they mean the same thing in different languages? Just want a democratically elected head of state/law makers etc. Edited by JL85 (20 Apr 2016 8.19pm)

He should be donning a uniform and 'having a crack at the Frogs or Krauts' in order to earn his keep. If there is no return to the height of the Empire within the next couple of decades then he is definitely a slacker.

It just refuted the opportunity to have a president instead of a head of state. The Governor General acts as the queen's representative, but, basically does not do too much. Unlike Prince William

I will reiterate once again seeing a you did not get it first time round. The Royals bring in millions of pound on their own both with visitors who do really like to see royalty and Buck house and all the pageantry that goes with it.... While this is true as an isolated fact, it doesn't support your argument because it presumes that if the Royals were disbanded, those tourists would no longer come. But the last time I looked, Versailles was jam-packed with tourists (in the absence of a French monarchy), the Winter Palace still packs them in (in the absence of the Romanov Dynasty) etc. etc. The plain truth is that the removal of Phil the Greek and his family would not end interest in Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, etc. Originally posted by susmik
Some of the Royals actually do go abroad to drum up business which AGAIN brings millions of pounds in and also creates jobs. As an added note they do pay taxes as well ..... Yes, they do but again, the problem is that your argument assumes there are no alternatives. There are, and possibly better ones. I mean, there are great many countries that have no Royal family (America comes to mind) that seem to manage to drum up rather more trade than Britain. In fact, you could argue that given the paucity of overseas investment we're generally able to atract, the Royal Family are not particularly effective performers in this role. And as for "they pay taxes..." well, they take handouts and pay some of their swag back. Can I have a job like that too, please? Originally posted by susmik
The part where I said you should go back to school is because you obviously did not pay attention to your history lessons when you were there or while you are there whatever the case may be. Books are a good source of knowledge to I'm not sure what you're implying here but history provides no argument for the continuation of the Royalty. Study it and you will learn about good monarchs and bad monarchs and, mostly, countries that have dispensed with an outdated monarchical system. But as ever with the English, we adopt the view of the world that best suits our traditional self-image, misplaced as that may be.
