It's the closest most domesticated males want to get to surviving in the wild. It feels macho to cook something using a fire whilst stood up holding some tongs like some kind of p**** extension. In most men's heads they see themselves stood over the carcass of a bear they just killed whilst surviving in the wilderness all on their own. Of course, in reality, deprive them of a 2 in 1 shampoo for 2 days and they'd have a meltdown.

The illusion is somewhat destroyed by the realisation that the Bear has given you a terrible case of the s**ts, as in the process of defeating said creature, it had sodomised you very thoroughly....

Oil drum Bar b q, with lump wood charcoal, not those horrible briquettes.

I have also just started to add those flavoured wood chips, and they do give the meat a much more intense flavour.

Get it lit, and leave for at least half an hour after the flames have died down.

Gas bar b q, is just plain lazy and you might as well just cook stuff in the oven, and eat it outside.

Also, you can make wicked stew like dishes by burying food in pots, in the ashes. Poikie I think the Safas call it. Bloody lovely it was too.

Agree with this. Spent a lot of time in SA and they certainly know how to Braai. In fairness if our weather was better we may have more practice!
