You can be both, people be British and ties to other countries. The nature of Britishness is cosmopolitian (you can be British and English / Scot / Welsh / Irish along with any number of small weird colony left overs.

The people of the Falklands, for example, can be both British and Falklanders in their identity. So why not British and Afghani?

I used the white british point because the cenus is so biased against the English that it isn't even a bloody option to identify yourself as just English......So I made the white British point to explain that overall the the English population of London is a minority....Which to many people is actually a point!.....I even explained that I included those not white who would say they were English.....bloody Blimey.

Here...shall I repeat myself for you seeing as you seem to miss points due to your prejudges.

London is an English city which has a minority of English people in it....Sod white british or black british....It's an ENGLISH city....I don't care what colour they are.....You can be black and English or whatever colour and English.

Some people on here, it's like tunnel vision.

That's not true though. Plenty of the Black and Asian populations of London will have been born in England. However I get what you mean though, and its interesting. Living in Reading, there is a surprising number of people in the area who moved here from London.

The determining factor in London's change is largely economic, the affluence of the 60s and 80s, saw a large number of people who benefitted from those changes from London, and these were largely people who were white, and had long historical family ties into the London boroughs.

Migration from abroad filled the migration that was the suburban transit of a large number of people born into long term London families.

The same era saw the growth of a lot of areas in the South East outside of London, where these people moved some for jobs, others for a different arguably perceived better life.

Yeah but according to him those people aren't actually English.

I've served with Ghurkas, excellent soldiers, extremely tough and disciplined IMO.
Dude, I am not racist, however I do have a problem with people coming here who are unskilled and don't offer anything. I don't blame them for wanting to build a better life but what really irritates me is this something for nothing culture. It's interesting that you bring up the Gurkha's as for me the have made the ultimate sacrifice by serving the crown, therefore they've put in something that a lot of immigrants haven't. The same goes for soldiers of any other nationality, they've put something in. I have a great amount of respect for that.
We have too many people here on benefits or taking unskilled jobs. We have enough of our own unemployed who could and should take those jobs. If immigration carries on at it's current rate, unchecked then we'll have massive problems (when I say our own I mean people who are born here and have a British passport). Trump talks sense in that respect. It's not about being a racist.

Funny you should mention the Gurkhas, as Reading has a Nepalese community, and a fair number of ex-Gurkhas in the area - We also have had problems with Nepalese organised crime and gangs.

I also however agree, we have unemployed people that we should be getting into work. The problem for me, is one of geography and wages. The use of migrant labour, typically of young people from the poorer EU states, has kept wages down.

Meanwhile benefits, have risen as they're tied to the actual cost of living. So we have a situation now that's very obvious, low skilled labour wages aren't sufficient to provide stability for families or even individuals. And you have a situation where people who do work are no better off than if they were unemployed.

Given a minuimum wage around Reading, will probably mean you get to rent a room in a bedsit or house share for just over half you income. Its simply not worth working, when you can be better off on benefits, and maybe doing a few odd jobs or hours at the local Asda to top up (provided you do less than 16 hours a week). The outcome of this, you'll have more disposable income, than if you worked 37 hours a week - You won't have a lot, but you will have more - Plus you have more spare time. Why should people work.

Also, people certainly can't to relocate to areas where such work is available, because they'd be massively worse off than staying where they are.

We need to end the notion of profit being in and of itself the justification for everything. Fix a real working wage as the minimum, and subserdise the relocation of people from areas of high unemployment to fill jobs, whilst at the same time ending the EU work to rule.

At present, society serves the interests of Corporations. Corporations must serve the needs of society.

Successive governments failed to tie minimum wage to the costs of living.

When we lived in Spain we met many couples who had children while living in the country.
Despite only ever living in Spain, I can't honestly think of any of these kids who thought of themselves as being Spanish (in any way).
It's possibly similar for many born here to foreign parents.

Time to move forward together.

We are all British according to our passport but that is just something that pro mass immigration people hide behind to deny the vast numbers of migrants and their offspring who now occupy our cities.

Labeling someone as British has no meaning in the real world. The term English has no meaning at all apparently.

Were they Spanish citizens? I don't particularly think of myself patricianly as British but I am, legally defined entirely as being a British Subject.

I know a lot of people who are of Indian Ethnic Heritage, and they regard themselves as British and English (as do their parents).

But ultimately, if you don't regard yourself as British, you are still British, its just your definition of what it means to be British is different to others. Just because you consider it less significant, it doesn't mean its less relevant.

You can swim against the tide of globalisation as much as you like but it will envelope you at some point. Better to ride the wave than fight it. After all, we were integral in starting it in the way our Empire worked. And many of us benefit from it, just look at where our Palace diaspora now live.

Banging on about immigration all the time isn't going to make much of a difference but certainly takes up a lot of space on this site. It's getting beyond ridiculous. Barely room for any football talk.

Personally I don't consider anyone to be English unless they can trace their blood line directly - without any outside influence - to the original inhabitants of Albion. The Greeks thought they came from Armorica, so we are all Frogs. Except then we had some Italians, Irish, Swedes, Norwegians, Icelanders, Danes, Germans, Dutch, more French and countless others who also decided they were English. And oddly we now consider ourselves Anglo Saxon.

To me a South Londoner is a South Londoner. Don't care if they are part of a coven or worship the Goddess Annoia (the Goddess of Things That get Stuck in Drawers). If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands.

Very interesting.
Of course if you could trace your ancestry back far enough you would eventually arrive in Africa.

I have Normans in my ancestry among others so does that mean I'm not entirely English?

This stuff is not really relevant. What is relevant is what you consider yourself to be, who you align yourself with and who other people consider you to be.
If your have lived here a couple of years, speak English as a second language or not at all and you have foreign flags all over your car then you won't rank very highly on other peoples English/British chart.
If you want to be British above and beyond clinging on to your foreign heritage and cultural baggage then you are well on your way.

'The rest are born in England, that makes them English'.....really a total load of BS.

Sorry mate but you don't get to define what an individual feels what their identity is. You know...that's kind of what a census is....You get to put down your identity....not what your passport says.

Now if Mo feels he is English that's fine with me but don't give me that crap about diversity being what British is.....Firstly I was talking about the English in London and secondly you don't get to define what British is either.

Each British...or in the case of what I was talking about English person gets to define that for themselves not for anyone else.

I wonder what people like Punch, Zaha, Kaikai or Boateng would think id they read some of these threads.

It's not exactly a stretch to think some of their family might.

Or are they different?
