He has not been bad when I have seen him. He was an Italy international, and was decent for a while at Newcastle. Not sure what happened to him, but he lost his place and ended up moving back to Italy.

The players linked were all decent at one stage. That they played for Newcastle seems to have ruined some of them. That being said, some of the players looked reborn under Benitez. So it might not be the players that were crap. It probably has as much to do with a toxic club, crappy coaches the last 12 months, and overly critical fans.

I am not saying I think these players are right for Palace, but Sevilla look for players who are out of favor and who have been playing poorly and snap them up for low fees. They then get them playing well again and sell them on. There was an excellent article in the Guardian about it, and I have heard a number of managers talk about how that is the best time to buy a player (despite the stick from the fans for doing it that way).

Ok, I take back what I said about Santon. Newcastle reject to Italian international, he's certainly gone up in my estimation. Don't know enough about to comment in whether he'd be a good signing or not.

I remember SP said something about signing players that no one else wants and it's a good policy if you have a good scouting network and are able to find genuine bargains. So far we've done well with recent signings and players like Souare and McArthur did not look out of place against Rojo and Carrick/Fellani/ who play in the same positions and cost a lot more. It won't work all the time though and if this is our approach we have to accept signings like Zeki Fryers as well.

I agree with what you said about Newcastle being a toxic club and it really has been a shambles for a long time now. The only plays I'd want from them would be Townsend, Lacelles (sp? young defender), Krul if he's still as good as a few seasons a go, and Shelvey if we could get him at a discount.
