Le sigh.... Let's cut our losses and move on. And I hope we don't get big time charlie Berahino or Babacar.

His agent who should know what going on, is saying "Benteke is not on the brink of leaving Liverpool" make of that what you will.

If that is correct I assume that whilst the media continue to work themselves up over the transfer that never was the powers that be have long moved on to another target that is currently under the radar.

Keith Millen did say that the club were hoping to bring in another player before they left for USA and whilst that didn't happen I assume that he wasn't talking about Benteke

It's not the first time an agent has come out with such a statement to make sure there's nobody else gonna come out of the woodwork & make an offer - just in case the quotes of "done deal" are putting them off bothering. It could also be him looking for more money himself.

Fact is, this has been rattling on for ages & he waits until now to say something. Smacks of BS or even that it has been him leaking stories to the press all along.

It would be interesting if we find out later that the actual stumbling block on the deal was the agent's fee.

Move on, if that is the case Benteke will see that his chance to relaunch is career was ruined by agent greed.

Edit: A quick check shows that Benteke really is his only meal ticket so I'd think he would milk it for everything he could get.

I don't think this deal is dead, Sky Sports got the quote from the agent and while they are a reliable source the only paper to pick up on it is the Standard.

So far this window The Guardian have been very much on the money when it comes to our dealings.

It could be a legitimate U-Turn because they were using us to attract a bigger club and now they have cold feet, but that isn't going to reflect well on the player or the agent when he tries to move again in January.

The move makes sense for all those involved so it could still happen.

One last thing, to the "if he doesn't want to play for us" brigade, we aren't a desirable club - it's not like we can boast a rich history of winning big competitions and state of the art facilities - if we're going to take the club to the next step and sign a top striker capable of getting 20 goals a season it will need to be a mercenary of sorts - hoping to boost his profile again.

The other option is to bet on younger talent but it looks like any mid-level striker will cost £25-£35 million this window and I'd rather a reluctant Benteke we KNOW can score in this league than a risky acquisition.

*BUMP*

Anyone remember Simon Jordan not wanting to pay the 100k agent fee

Before the start of the 2004–05 season, Cahill was transferred to Everton for a fee of £1.5 million, after Millwall's South East London rivals Crystal Palace ended negotiations of a potential transfer to themselves over a payment to his agents. In his first season, he was Everton's top goalscorer and was the fans' Player of the Season.

Who says we have not moved on ?

This could well be dead that's why the "agent" is claiming he wants to stay in scouseland.....he has no other option.

Would not be unhappy if he stays at Liverpool - They paid a large amount to keep their bench warm, all the speculation and auction action provides a good smoke screen for buying another team (squad) member rather than a star.

Odds on Christian Benteke coming to Palace 1/4, yesterday they were 1/6 , odds on him staying at Liverpool 6/1.

Didn't this turn out to be false and we were never actually in for him?

Jordan said to Cahill something along the lines of "you're lucky that we've come in for you". Cahill didn't like it and chose not to sign.

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

He won't stay on the bench forever , Emmanuel adebayor did the same thing getting paid big bucks to warm the bench then he pretty much rotted away and then came to us for half a season and did jack diddly !!
