Which is Aussie speak for generally 'white'. Why is that a better quality that they educated or skilled, surely that is a threat to existing jobs and trades of the upper working classes, rather than the working classes?

Australia, is a country where migration is very much still about race, they're just far less open about it.

An interesting aside to this, is that my wife is White South African, and in the last 12 years or so a lot of her family and friends have had absolutely no trouble emigrating to Australia - Even people she knew who dropped out of school, and have no really defined skill set.

I noticed you were away for a few days and was almost concerned enough to post a thread about your absence and what you were doing or did to yourself.

My bet was on you 'doing a Hutchence/Milligan'.

Was it? I was questioning why anyone would advocate something they weren't sure about and you gave a good reply.

As someone else said after the Australian system could be seen as pro white and didn't really cover skill sets.

Do don't go out of your way to socialise or spend time with people of other nationalities. However, you seem very adept at telling others what they should do. Interesting.

I've just had my Bulgarian next door neighbour pop round for a cuppa.
Back to topic, will the government's plan affect your Ghanaian fiance's right to stay here?

I love your infatuation with me. Some might call it stalking.

Now I'm not saying I have the answers, but I'm sure I'd integrate better if people were less hostile towards me.Yes it is better if you can speak the language. Being encouraged to immerse oneself into a culture would speed things up.

You keep quoting that fact as if it is some sort of triumph against such a system.

Australia are not looking to restrict numbers, they are trying to improve the quality of them. They have designed their system to suit their needs now. If that need changes then they can tweak it.

If we adopted a points based system it would be tailored to our specific needs and if necessary an annual cap (on first come basis) could be imposed or ratchet up the entry conditions.

It's not too hard a concept to get your head around, which for you as ex teacher, should be a doddle.

As contraire I was raising the point that those advocating an aussie style points system (where immigration has increased) counters the argument of reducing immigration.
Have Farage etc al told us how the points system would work in the UK? How could we vote for something that we don't have the details of?

Why the hell would you need the details now?

Except to be contrary and make a feeble point.

You pointing out that Australian immigration has gone up under their system is IRRELEVANT.

Try to understand.... their system suits their current needs. They will change their system as their needs change.

Now here's the tricky bit.... We will introduce a system tailored to our needs. Boris cannot announce it now because he cannot implement it now. So an announcement of a blueprint or detailed system is not necessary or valid.

However, if we vote leave, he (as I suspect he will be PM) will get together with other MP's, NHS Senior Staff, Lawyers, Engineers, etc etc and work through the details. Whatever initial system they come up with though will be subject to review and possible change.

Got it?

I don't disagree but it was becoming less of an issue than previously. The last 12-18 months has seen that change again.

As for the initial comment, they tend to look for people that won't generally take up the lower grade jobs. You can argue the pros and cons of that approach but it has seemed to work so far.

As another aside, lots of Brits are coming back from Oz now especially as they reach retirement

Isn't that explicitly unfair to people who occupy the medium tier of jobs, the ones that actually pay a decent wage, and thus pushing those wages down, now that there is vast competition for low skilled jobs (and thus no need or value to use immigration to push wages in those areas down).

Its the classic, once they're done f**king the poor over they squeeze the poorer, then those who are doing ok, then those who've made something for themselves and so on.

Personally I'd like to know even the basics of what it would involve. Some sort of outline. All I've heard is we'd have an Australian style points system and no more.

Because that how egalitarian the conservative party and Boris Johnson are... If we vote exit, we will not have a system that suits our needs, it will be a system that suits the needs of business interests and corporate power lobbys in the UK.

It won't even go to a manifesto and general election of the public.

If we leave, the EU, we should call a general election with manifestos laid out on how the UK will implement leaving the EU. I know the 'anti-migrant' brigade think leaving the EU will somehow result in an almost utopian solution to UK problems (Housing, wages, public services, economic power etc).

That's just not the case. Its about how you implement a change, and how you control the variables, that results in an effective transition of state.

My bet, even with an exit, the changes will be 'business as usual'.
