Would I fight for my country in an existential war....yep. My family, like most, did that as far back as I know. It's true, the cult of individualism allows certain people to conveniently detach themselves from ideas such as commitments to the nation state. Funny how they don't detach themselves from its benefits however. But that's a different rant. I wouldn't have an issue with someone not supporting a war or the reasons for a war.....Not fighting however, unless there are exceptional circumstances....that's a coward. The Germans who refused to fight for their nation under their Government which was in power 1933-45 and the others who surreptitiously worked to undermine those incumbents are, rightly, classified as very brave and heroic. Some would have helped The Allies. So, can you still not envisage a situation where you wouldn't fight for your country and Queen/King? Would you always be a Cavalier and never a Roundhead? There is nothing wrong with objecting to a war and campaigning against it, but working for the other side in most situations is betrayal. In situations where you know that your country is committing genocide against a race of people and....any set of people they don't approve of.....maybe in those circumstances working against your state has ethics to it. However, this is a pretty extreme set of circumstances. Alexander, for example, didn't praise these people in his time, he put them to death. I'd lock them up in mine. Obviously in a war you use what these people have to offer but in my eyes....unless there are exceptional circumstances....a traitor is a traitor. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Jul 2016 12.32pm)
