By that logic (ie, you need passion, not experience) then it should be Gary Neville, not Shearer. Shearer's got about as much passion as a wet Wednesday in Wigan.

Not sure who's better though. Would be interesting to see how the FA view the rumours he was disagreeing with Hodgson's decisions during the tournament. However.... I read the original article in the Guardian, now when searching for it, the results bring this up..
So either the story was false, or Neville recognises the damage it may have to his reputation and is going on the front foot.

Given the terrible choice of candidates, my personal preference would be Arsene Wenger. Experienced, talented, good with young players and about as 'English' as you can get if you're going to get a foreigner. Might also suit Arsenal to get rid by having him poached by a non-rival.

We’ve just gone from a manager with no tactical nous and now some are saying Shearer or Neville just because they’re passionate, it’s such an out dated logic. Stuart Pearce had plenty of passion but couldn’t even cut it at U21 level for England why would the above two be any different at senior level? Yes we need passion in our managers, not a soulless dictator like Capello but we need someone with tactical knowledge as well, someone who can get the players to understand and enjoy the tactical side and implement it in a game with confidence. It’s Glen Hoddle for me, he talks so well in interviews and as a commentator and he actually played a 3-5-2 system that worked (almost) for England on the big stage.

I was saying that *if* you think passion is a selection criterium (I don't) then you'd be barking up the wrong tree with Shearer. I was *not* saying Neville should get the job!

State of Origin is very different to the football World Cup man. As for your estimation on how many people would say "f*** off" to Southgate, I think you're a little off the mark. Now for Shearer. I know it's not on TV here but do you ever watch Match of the Day? Shearers post match commentary never really extends beyond "at the end of the day if you don't get the ball in the net, you don't score goals" and other such pearls of wisdom. These errrr 'classic' one liners are not the sort of thing that will take the England team further than they curently are.

I'd love Neil Warnock. We might still be s*** but we'd play with passion, excitement and would love to see the foreign managers and players reactions to him. It'd be great fun
