They played much better without Ronaldo in the final as it wasn't Ronaldo FC anymore. England won't win anything no matter who the manager is. Players just don't give a s***. Also when players who hardly play all season and who are out of form get picked, I'm not surprised we don't do anything.

Portugal could quite easily have won the group if they notched a couple of the many chances they had in every game. It was a strange tournament due to the 3rd team qualifying opportunity but it is definitely possible for a lesser team to sneak a Euros trophy. Greece in in 2004 an Portugal in 2016. We could even reach a World Cup semi final if we applied ourselves properly. England players unite more when they have a manager more inspiring and loosen up. A manager is also not contracted to pick from the usual big 4 or 5 clubs. If he has guts he'd go for form rather than the option of big name, big club player which means less criticism when you return home, as long as you aren't completely humiliated.

He bought wisely in January and I think it was the 1st time in a good few years their net transfer spending was significantly above break even. i.e - they can still afford to invest and know the dangers of not doing so.

Doesn't matter who it is; nothing will change. Elite clubs will continue to dominate selection regardless of form, fitness or fitness for position. Players will happily bow out early in order to reduce the risk of injury, ensure they have a full lavishly expensive holiday, are available from the opening game to maximise play bonuses and - again - keep their elite paymasters happy. The pattern will continue. Win every qualifying game; FA gets lucrative sponsorship deal for summer Finals; players suddenly "forget" how to play and what they have practised game after game; ignominious "shock" exit in the knock-out stage; manager falls on sword.

It's about coaching and identity, rather than players being reluctant to risk injury or only selecting players from the top 4. Coaching is at such a poor standard in this country - from the very youngest levels of football development - and the FA just doesn't improve it. And the premier league is too focused on commercial success without the damage that can do to the development of competitive young English/British talent. Even when we do have good young talent (Kane, Alli, Walker, Rose, Smalling, Sterling, etc.) we still fail to actually turn that into a coherent strategy for success. Roy Hodgson had 4 games in a major european tournament and still didn't know his best side by the end of it.
