Surely just cemented Erdogan further in power.

It's crazy that he was telling people to go on the streets and fight

Anyone on this site in Istanbul or Ankara with first hand knowledge? I have loads of good mates in Istanbul and Ankara and have faith in - and empathy with - the average Turkish person. I hope to goodness this doesn't escalate.

Last time I Looked, calling people names on here got you banned.
Calm down. Your insult and constant stream of hyperbole have no effect on me whatsoever and are only likely to effect your blood pressure.

It's a pity the coup failed. It was as least more secular in purpose and it's not like the country is heading in a good direction at present.

My thoughts exactly. As others have said, how noble of him to urge the mob onto the streets to get shot.

In the current atmosphere, there is more speculation than facts.

Over 2,000 judges have been dismissed in Turkey, the TRT Haber news channel

Immediately using what has happened to change the country. No doubt they will eventually be replaced by clerics, imams or other individuals we no desire to question a more religious take on society.

The Prime Minister has been emasculated with his executive powers now lying in the hands of the President, which I don't think is in line with the Turkish Constitution. Journalists have been imprisoned and the media is either controlled or restricted. Christian churches are been seized and declared as property of the state. Plus the ongoing civil bust-ups with the Kurds, all seemingly ignored by Chancellor Merkel and others. A coup or civil war seem inevitable.

Anyone supporting the coup calling themselves democrates would really be hypocrites.

Modern secularism should not attempt to win its arguments though internal force. Turkey has democratically been lost to religious governance..... and inevitably freedoms have been and will continue to slowly erode with the judiciary, journalism and media controlled.

A separation between state and religious governance just isn't preferred in Islamic thought.....Never mind eh...the lefties will find a way to support it.

In the meantime genuine Turkish secularists are best advised to withdraw to western countries......the ideals of Ataturk are slowly disappearing.

That prompted this coup and its dismantling is only going to accelerate now.

What happened last night is similar to what Hitler did with the Reichstag. It wouldn't surprise me if Erdogan did this intentionally to get the executive powers.

I was wondering if there was some foreign involvement: USA or Russia.
