I have been saying for quite a while that this event should no longer be allowed to carry on due to all the
anti-social problems and the wanton violence.How can such an event with all it's problems year on year be allowed to continue ?

Absolutely correct.
And you will get that argument that the majority are fun-loving, well-behaved, pillars of society etc etc etc.

Far too much trouble and a lot of hard-earned tax payers money being spent on dealing with those hell-bent on violence.

In the 80s and 90s, banning football because of the associated problems with hooliganism wasn't considered an option. Social problems need to be resolved, definitely, but you don't achieve that through targeting the whole society, only the problems. As with hooliganism, the successes really only came when the actual problem and instigators were directly targeted and effectively dealt with, whilst not overly affecting the average law abiding fan. There is a distinction between a yearly event and our national game of football which involves millions of people and is part of our heritage.In any event there was NO violence at most pro games.Was it practical to ban football in our country ????

So the fact that football was not banned in the past is enough to justify not banning an event which year on year sees violence and people injured ? I accept that wherever there is a gathering of a lot of people fuelled on alcohol etc etc there is always the propensity for trouble but things at the 'Carnival' have got out of hand.

If football was still getting the problems from 30-40 years ago, it probably would be.

Why should this not get with the times as football had to, and has done? Other one off events with those levels of arrests/issues would get clamped down on. I'll give you Fabric nightclub for a current example.

At the games, no, but before and after and in relation to them, definitely. I think its a fair comparison, that banning the festival, won't actually do anything to quell trouble and violence. The festival is worth saving, its a part of London and UK cultural heritage. Same as with football. There is a suggestion that 'Carnival' should be moved away from Notting Hill as the gangs and muggers among the majority of law-abiding carnival-goers operate in an environment that favours them over the Police and the ability of all the emergency services to get to where they need to be remains hampered.
