No, I was sat in my kitchen and I heard him saying quite loudly "oh for f**ks sake" and I thought "either something has gone wrong or Glenn Murray has just scored" so I asked him if he was ok. At which point he told me what he was struggling with.

Do many people actually have cash these days to tip anyone ? I know people who pay for their drinks and meal on a card then get an UBER cab home where the fare comes off the card they have registered with them.Everything done on a card. By contrast, the other day I someone pull out a thick wad of notes to buy a round which is unusual to see these days.Funnily enough on the way to this pub I saw an eldely gentleman with a pipe which is certainly an unusual sight in this modern era.

Should've been, it was just being more of a b****** then he'd anticipated by the sound of it. I'm thinking more like when you've had something that hasn't worked for ages but it's never been a big deal, then you remember it while they are there and they fix it in a few minutes.

Sliding scale really isn't it? If I go to a restaurant I start with the default 10-15% figure in mind. If they're friendly and put in a real effort I'll give them that or more, if they are rude and/or lazy then I will give less. Went to one recently where the waitress was abysmal, really rude and seemed furious with me every time I asked for something and as such I had no reservations leaving sod all. Same with a pizza delivery I guess. Will give them a few quid unless it shows up cold 80 minutes later in which case I probably won't.

I have a friend who rather enjoys asking the waiter/waitress "what button do I press for no tip" Its so embarrassing, but funny if the service has been poor. When dining out with him I have to leave a tip on the table when he gets up to go, and yes, even if it's a poor service...

I try and tip people in advance if I can. That way they're more incentivised to deliver a good service. Otherwise, I'm pretty conventional: hairdresser, waiters or waitresses, delivery people. I try and avoid tipping taxi drivers unless they're really nice.

Blimey, you must have some American blood in you Johnny They tip the concierge as soon as they get into a hotel on the logic they will get well looked after. If I regularly use the same person for something I tip them, which essentially incentivises them for next time. It's mainly my barber actually...
