Last season we were about 14th in spending (and had nothing really to sell). And most of that was Cabaye and Wickham.

As SP has said, it's a different environment trying to build a top-half team instead of just buy up the best of the Championship and try to survive.

This summer they brought in 5 class players mostly from teams that finished well above us. They are clearly being careful who they go in for, but can't get everyone they want. The fact that Flamini would consider Palace as a destination is a great indicator. If he signs, more than half the starting 11 could be new arrivals. Great business, that seems to be part of a long term plan.

Your second paragraph sums it up. We were a midtable side the first two seasons. Now we have invested in big reputation players, we are a bottom half team treading water.

Signing players from sides who finished above us maybe, but in truth they're mainly rejects

That's the spirit, nice to see your getting behind the team again.

why do you have so much contempt for the players and management?

You should see a shrink. We've the best squad ever. And yet constant slagging the team off.

Really? We punched way above our weight in the first 2 seasons and were fortunate to stay up. We were bottom 3 both seasons going into the Xmas break. Last year we were top 5 going into the break.

We had a string of injuries, and have since struggled. For the 1st season since promotion we were never in any relegation danger.

Now we have substantially improved our squad and are looking to establish ourselves as a Premiership club.

We're looking at a record 4th season in the prem, were in the FA Cup final, have probably the best squad we've ever had and have the whole f***ing season ahead.

But obviously we're just not good enough for you, so why not just toddle off....

We're here to support, you're just here to bitch and moan.

Just pointing out that it doesn't necessary make you a stronger team, and since the American money has come in we have been utter sh**

Plenty of teams have come a cropper chasing the dream

Big money? Relative to the division, our expenditure was still tiny.

The problem with your analogy about spending/progression is that you're not considering the fact that every other club is also spending considerably more - the money we're spending is to remain competitive, if you think it entitles us to a top 10 finish, you're way off.

The truth is we have been either hard to beat under Pulis or lucky under Pards, by his own admission we can't go on nicking away games.
We have to progress just to stand still in mid-table obscurity. This we seem to be doing by buying cast offs from above us (inc Andros) with the odd bit of genius (Steve).
We are also trying to spot talent (Wickham) but that doesn't always work.
With the money coming in its not too hard to see that its going to get harder for those in the championship staying up.
Everyone else is building too but we have a huge advantage. LONDON.

I think we are (mostly) moving beyond buying true castoffs who couldn't even get in a squad (like Kelly, Freyers and Chamakh).

Like most bottom half teams, we traditionally try to do well buying from relegated teams in the summer. We did that again with Townsend.

But if there is to be any aspiration, we need to do better, and we have. The additions have been careful, and required active recruitment.

Tomkins was a WHU starter, and they were sad to see him go, he was no more a castoff than Bolasie was for us.

Media may call Benteke a flop, but that's BS. The guy is quality, and was in demand. Signing him was massive. If he knocks in 15, I'll be overjoyed, and the media will still call him a flop all because he only had 14 starts but scored 9 for a "Top team".

Mandanda looks like an inspired free signing, and Flamini should be too.

Look at some teams that finished above us like WBA and Swans.

Palace had a great window, and showed some (realistic) intent.

Is there a more boringly negative poster on here than Murray's the man? I doubt it, although there's plenty the of competition at the moment.

Your man Murray is a Palace reject scratting around in the Championship. Let that logic sink in.

But you just know it won't even penetrate, let alone sink in.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

It is probably the only penetration he will experience & he still messes it up.

The table doesn't lie. Its only a record 4th season if we stay up. We are one place above the drop, until Sat
