I don't really get it. It is apparently someone trying to help Honduras qualify. But El Salvador are playing Canada, who need to beat El Salvador and rely on Mexico beating Honduras to have any chance of qualifying.

So was the bribe an "incentive" to try harder to beat Canada?

Usually these things are related to gambling, rather than national interests.

Agreed. If it was just someone trying to make money I would get it. But if it was - as appears to have been the case - someone trying to incentivise the El Salvador team to try harder so they might beat Canada then it seems a very odd choice.

Surely the better game to try and bribe would have been the games El Salvador had against Honduras - easier to get someone to lose than try and get someone to try harder to win.

Made no difference in the end. Canada won, but Honduras got a draw and so qualified.
