It's a great position of strength to have and a nice headache for Pardew to have, Cabaye hasn't looked himself, apart from 2nd half versus Spurs, he hasn't been 100% fit yet and this break to get his fitness will do him the world of good, I thought Ledley and Macarthur were outstanding yesterday, Jimmy Mac in particular he is possibly our most important player who links everything

Although cabaye a class above technically he hasnt got the legs or natural defensive instincts of either. His passing range with benteke and townsend running in behind may be interesting to see when hes back. However in current system can only see him fitting in for jimmy mac whos best player at club for me. Dm flamini or ledders, centre jimmy mac or cabaye. With punch and lee fighting out 10 role.for me shape is so important as you have to expect punch and zaha to lose the ball at times its just the way they play. I think we have a nice blend in middle now but must play best mix not always best individuals, of which cabaye clearly is. Yohan over to you mate to get back in side...

Completely disagree.

Cabaye showed last season that he has both.

Yup. There were a number of reasons for our drop in form from xmas - almost all down to injuries with a consequent drop in confidence.

Lazy journalists pointed at the loss of Bolasie as he is a flash media-friendly player. For my part, the loss of Jimmy Mac was the more important. There was almost an exact correlation between his absence and the team's failings.

I would be a much happier man if Mac was like The Unbreakable Jedinak. Imagine him going season after season with barely an injury?

...In spades.

Which is more than I can say for Flamini. He got left for dead yesterday and could have cost us a goal [if it was anyone but Stoke]. I can't recall the last time I saw one of our players so well beaten for pace. Hopefully, this is something the coaches are working on to get him back to full match fitness.

Wasn't he just. He seemed to start sprinting and then slowed down after 2/3 paces. I couldn't believe it. We cannot have that with a normal scoreline. He'll have to be brought up to pace before he can be considered a real option or he'll be a liability.

Said to my Dad at full time that Flamini badly needed those minutes.

Early days of course, but it will be interesting to see who gets player of the year. I think McArthur would be a very well deserved and popular winner.

Well Cabaye won't be match fit, so Ledley starts. But I still bring Cabaye on at say 66 min (earlier if we are chasing the game).

If all are healthy, I expect Cabaye and McArthur to start, with Ledley to sub on when needed.

I haven't looked at stats, but both Ledley and Cabaye are solid defensively, but I'd bet that Cabaye is miles better on interceptions. Cabaye is a better playmaker by far, and makes life difficult. No contest for me.

Now just make sure Benteke takes the penalties...

Joe Ledley is hugely underrated. I reckon our win ratio with him in the side is pretty good, better than Cabaye and McArthur perhaps. That is only a gut feeling but I am sure someone with far more time than I will prove me wrong!

This really should be no surprise. When Jedi went off to the Asian Cup, we played Ledley & Macca and won eight of the 12 games from 10th January 2015. It's a combination that worked then and works now. Injuries and the arrival of Cabaye have largely prevented it from being tried again until recently.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

You remember the Spurs game Parrot? Cabaye replaced Ledley at half time and it changed the game massively because of Cabayes ability to get the team moving forward. Ledley and Cabaye are pretty well matched defensively but Cabaye offers a dimension offensively that Ledley just doesn't have in his locker. They will all be rotated Flamini included once hes matchfit but the big games will be JMac and Cabaye if everyones 100%.

Yep. Didn't Punch play alongside Ledley? Completely different to the point I was trying to make.

Macca and Ledley are a partnership and its working both defensively and offensively.

We need to play what works well and not tinker just because a star player returns from injury.

A quick count up on Soccerbase gives win percentages of Ledley 50% - 34/68 Cabaye 43% - 17/40 and McArthur 47% - 29/62.

This is the bare statistics of all games each has been involved in and includes sub appearance and all competitions.
