That's what really grates my carrot - I hate when people get offended on other people's behalf. If the guard in question had an issue, that would be one thing, but if the victim just lets it slide (and probably just thinks "what a d1ck" then who are the do-gooders to deem it offensive.

I agree, find it quite patronising. Wasn't there a story about a council in Birmingham years ago telling the Salvation Army to take down their Christmas decorations in case Muslims might be offended? If I remember correctly they hadn't even actually consulted any Muslims but in their attempts to be overtly PC, the story got mis-translated into "Muslims tell Salvation Army to take down Christmas decorations in a largely Christian country" which was not true at all and actually served to create resentment against a people minding their own business.

That's what I think is dangerous about this sort of thing. Most of the public can think for themselves but sometimes I think actually this sort of thing gives ammunition to the dumbos.

Its surprising how often these kinds of stories turn out to either be vastly inflated (someone at a meeting may have suggested or mentioned that people could be offended and it gets reported as being the 'policy'), or totally unfounded, and in fact fabricated nonsense.

You can usually tell when the story has phrases like, an insider said, or sources close to x revealed, and rather than any actual names.

Or start with "The BBC are reporting..."

What a joke. One or two around here have said much worse than this. He was just having a laugh not mocking appearance or culture. Even if taken the wrong way, I'm very uncomfortable with this going to the courts.

I get sad whenever I read a story about Gazza or see a photo of him. His life is a story that likely isn't going to have a happy ending. Episodes like this one don't help him.

Security guard laughed originally, it seems someone else was offended on his behalf.

That was the year that Birmingham Council did away with Christmas entirely and replaced it with Winterval for fear of upsetting Muslims whom it later transpired couldn't care less and actually enjoyed Christmas

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Seems that the research behind that article is pretty thorough, even tracking down the source, and that even the papers that have run with the story have accepted its not a true story.

I'm not saying that you're lying either, but that the original story is false and it 'became the truth' kind of like how urban myths do. It does seem that a lot of people who claimed it was true have since recanted, against their best interest.

Haha, yeah, doesn't surprise me. My mate's dad owns an Indian restaurant and my mate works there. All the guys that work there are pretty devout Muslims but they love Christmas. The restaurant goes to an effort to looks Christmassy in December. You could be cynical and say that it's for capitalistic reasons, but ultimately if they were actually offended by Christmas they wouldn't care how much revenue it generates, they'd scrap their Xmas decs. Let's stop presuming we know what offends a huge section of society!

Didn't someone jokingly suggest that Christmas be moved to the end of October because Dec25 = Oct31
(that one for geeks only).

I love it. Although it appeals to the kind of people that wear t-shirts that say "There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't".

I.e.: losers.
