He toddled out into the back garden, as fast as his little legs could take him.

He looked around - everywhere were lights zipping around, birds singing, flowers glowing - he was happy!

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

He stopped waddling, as a bizarre sound manifested somewhere in the distance. He listened intently to the strange buzzing, fascinated, intrigued as to what it could be. Was it a giant flock of birds? A squadron of aeroplanes? Was it - Spiderman and Doctor Strange?

There was only one way to find out.

"Daddy?" he asked. "Wod dat funy noiz?"

"What's that, son?" asked his father, kindly.

"Dat funy noiz, Daddy. Dat one ober dair.." He pointed up in the sky, as his father leant on his hoe and listened.

"Oh, that's the Speedway, son.." replied his father.

He was puzzled. "Wod dat, Daddy?" he asked.

"That's motorbikes going round and round, having a race, son.." replied his father.

He carried on listening for a while and then lost interest, as toddlers often do.

He started watching the lights again, zipping around everywhere. The birds were singing to him - "Hello little boy! We're your friends!" The flowers were talking to him. Everything was alive - happy!

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The weather had turned cold.

He noticed the chill in the air. He looked in vain for any birds and noticed that all the flowers had gone, too.

He stood, feet firmly planted, intently scanning the sky, when..

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!

An explosion of noise erupted in the sky. He was transfixed. This time, it didn't sound like motorbikes. It sounded like.. people.. and lots of them.

As he listened, dumbfounded, the noise gradually subsided and then disappeared completely.

He toddled indoors, as fast as his little legs could carry him. He ran into the living room.

"DADDY! DADDY!" he cried. "Wod dat big noiz?" He pointed in the general direction of the garden.

"What's that, son?" asked his father.

"Daddy! Daddy!" he exclaimed excitedly. "Cum out side! Big noiz - peeple!"

He grabbed his father's arm and pulled him up and out of his chair, through the kitchen into the garden.. but the noise had gone.

They both stood for a few seconds.. and then, as if by magic..

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!

There was an eruption of noise, a clamour of thunder, a bolt of lightning and the full celestial choir started singing, as his father said:

"Oh that's Crystal Palace, son, the football. They must have just scored."

His little eyes went wide with excitement, as he grabbed his father's arm agitatedly.

"Daddy!" he shouted. "Daddy! We go! We go fudboll! Daddy! Daddy! Pally! Pally! Cri-tal Pally! We go Pally, Daddy! Pally! Pally!"

He was relentless. Every Saturday that he could, he would stand outside in the back garden, intently listening for any crowd noise that he could hear. Some days he couldn't hear a thing, but on days when the conditions were right, he could hear every nuance of the crowd reacting to the play. He even learned to tell a home goal from an away goal, by the relative volume.. but every time he asked his father if they could go, it was always the same reply.

"You're too young, son.."

He burned with the frustration of being too young.. but it was only a matter of time..

And so it came to pass, in the year of our team 1963, that the author finally realised his dream and made his maiden pilgrimage to the sacred grove of the park of Selhurst*.

The rest is history.

*2-1 v Wrexham 9.11.63.

My first game was in 1960. I was five years old and my dad took me to Selhurst Park. I must admit I don't remember anything about that day but I believe we beat Accrington Stanley 9-3 or some crazy score like that. It's in the family. My long departed grandfather started supporting the Palace from the start in 1906 (5?). I have been living in SF CA for 27 years but if anything I'm more of a Palace fanatic then ever. Keeping the family tradition alive and well. COYP!

Pretty sure my first game was September 95 when I was finally old enough to travel to a game on my own , was Birmingham away , the score 0-0 and the game was awful. My first home game I think was the same year , a couple of months later , it was against Derby , the score 0-0 and another awful game !!! The first truly entertaining game I went to was I think later that same season when we won either 4-1 or 4-2 away at Oxford *just checked online , wasn't far off 09/09/95 Brum game 25/11/95 Derby game but wrong about Oxford , that was 01/03/97

I was at the Oxford game too ... stayed with a friend at Glamorgan uni and we got wrong train then taxi from Swindon ... we were standing just behind the goal ... 1-1 half time when teams came out we shouted at Oxford keeper (Paul Whitehorse) to let a few more in ... he turned round and said "alright" ... we won 4-1!!!

My first game was palace-qpr in 87 ... qpr wore a day glow orange kit and the ref got knocked out by a loose ball off Eric young ... 0-0 result!

My first was November 1966 in a 0-0 draw against Norwich. Some great early memories included beating Leeds in the league cup in 67 with rocket foot Colin Taylor scoring a great goal. Then of course our 3-2 win against Fulham taking us up to the first division for our first game drawing 2-2 with Man U.
Celebrated my 50 years last year coming down for our 3-0 win against Southampton.
But that day in 66 will live me me always.

See below.

A new vicar arrived in our parish from Wallington, and virtually the first thing he said to my dad and me was "do you like football?". You see, he had a presumably wealthy friend who each year gave him a pair of season tickets for the main stand, but he could rarely use them on a Saturday because basically he had to marry people!

So we took up his kind offer to use the tickets whenever he couldn't, and basically we were hooked for life. I remember the excitement of finding the ground from our home in Bexley, of buying the programme and - bizarrely - of my dad treating me to a Kia-Ora orange juice from the bar in the stand. That drink became part of the pre-match ritual. I also remember being surprised by how wildly Liverpool celebrated their goal; I guess I didn't think it would be that big a deal for such a large club!

How lucky was I? Or unlucky to be condemned to a life of hell - ironically by a member of the clergy. And obviously I put the mockers on the club, because it was pretty much downhill from there, with the two successive relegations. I therefore apologise to you all!

Mr Talons your little story deserved some praise. it was nice...brought a place and a time to life.

My 1st game was 0-0 v Preston late 70s I reckon. probably 79 but I dunno. I can't be sure on any if it. why didn't I just walk away?

weirdly my first memory is Swindlehurst -- in my mind i conflate him with Blake off Blake 7 -- smashing an overhead kick home from right over by the touchline.

I accept it almost certainly
didn't happen. also very much in my mind's eye, the sale of Swindlehurst was ACTUALLY what doomed that great team.
