I believe that Blair was socially centre left. Economically centre right.

His government passed a number of socially leftish bills that no Tory government at the time would have considered, such as adopting the Human Rights Bill, Civil Partnership legislation, equalising the age of consent, aspects of the 2002 Employment Act and allowing unmarried couples to adopt.

I think its very likely the conservatives would have passed the Human Rights Act (199 and most of the issues that people seem to have around this stems from not understanding how it relates to pre-existing UK law.

I also think that the age of consent would likely have been lowered under a conservative government - given the next conservative government create gay marriage.

I think they might have had more division in their party though over them. But gay issues were vote winners for parties on either side.

It is probably fairer to say that an urban, left leaning elite have been shaping social policy in this country for nigh on two decades. Most of what they have forced upon British society, through legislation, law and the media, was not a 'grassroots' consensus (overbearing political correctness being the shining example). People like Blair, Brown, Straw, Burnham, Toynbee and Corbyn are culturally, politically and socially adrift by miles from the man in the Rochdale, Oldham, Portsmouth or Middlesbrough street, yet keep pursuing their social agenda on behalf of the mythical 'working class'.

This is why this establishment got walloped on June 23rd and will get walloped in the next General Election & beyond. And it is a beautiful thing to see.

Spot on analysis Matt... and hopefully prediction for the future!

Oh come on Jamie, surely you are pretending to not know what this refers to.

It's not the old party-centric nature of whose in power now. It's the cultural liberalization of PC culture, political feminism, the body positivity movement and all other manifestations of the cultural liberalised left.

So rather than ruled, the term pervasive ideas among the populace. I quite agree, ideas are definitely prevalent and rise and fall in popularity within society.

Personally I find the hyperbole of political correctness gone mad just as annoying as people who throw out racist as a means of engaging in an actual debate. Its the new 'shouting fascist' at anyone who is right wing.

I think there is a case for saying that the use of political correctness has probably run its course, now that its become adopted as a means of 'shouting down' rather than opening up discourse.

Of course, the term liberal left does really just mean anything that isn't right wing. Following that American trend of the idea that somehow being liberal on an issue (i.e. open to right and left wing arguments towards a pragmatic solution) is somehow a bad thing.

That's a very good criticism of the Labour party in a nutshell. Although the reason for this, was to appeal to the centre ground and centre right, where most swing voters are present.

The real error of New Labour wasn't that it focused social policy around these issues, but that it did so whilst failing to support its core base. On the left, issues like racism, gender inequality, sexuality etc have always been present within even the strong left power basis - Gay rights are nothing new to anyone who's ever been in a union.

But the abandonment of the working class, by New Labour, to embrace a corporate upper working middle class conservative light economic policy, backed by identity politics as a 'leftist' incentive sold out the working classes.

Always cracks me to see you middle aged, straight, white and largely middle class males petrified that your grip on western society is under threat.

The younger generation are far too liberal, multi cultured and 'politically correct' (i.e. not short-sighted individuals who fear difference) for any shift to the right to last that long.

The above says to me that you are unable, or unwilling, to actually understand what is being said here.

Your loss, not mine.

Don't bother voting then as when I conscientiously (for the love of my family's future) bother to care and ask serious questions, I tend to receive insightful responses....however such substance is ALTOGETHER different from politically biased tabloids whose owners skimp upon corporate tax courtesy of ...our Govt!

Apart from the fact that the younger ones turn out to vote in such low numbers.

We have hardly shifted to the right either.
