People are too quick to write the guy off. Still makes a massive contribution to the club and will be big shoes to fill when the time comes.

Whilst he's not quick he has adapted his game and rarely has a bad 90 minutes.

Also the leader on the pitch, organises and encourages. For all Dann's qualities (and now Tomkins) it is still Damo who is the talker at the back.

Finally the other great benefit of Dmo is he's left footed - gives the back4 more natural balance with a left and right footed centre back pairing.

Incidentally as Sol Campbell got 100k a week including a 40k a week loyalty bonus he wasn't really a free transfer - as Parish repeatedly says it's the overall cost of the player that counts - transfer fee and wages combined.

No benefit to being left footed if all you do with that left foot is hoof it aimlessly into the corner.

He's been a warrior for us. But his time is coming...Tomkins-Dann is the way forward.

Remarkably similar beginnin and character to the great John McCormick.I think he came from Third Lanark after the club went broke, he also lasted several years including promotion to the old First Division, and prior to Delaney my favorite central defender, lucky club that finds two of these

Wasn't JM later the landlord of the Gloucester pub near Spurgeons Bridge.

You must have missed the ball that set up the comeback at Sunderland.

A lot of he time he has no option but to hoof the ball after a certain midfielder has passed it ten times around the halfway line going nowhere and the opposition has had time to press enough and mark everyone so the only option is to clear when he gets the final pass.

We don't have a statue of any Palace hero like some other clubs so how about one of Damo when he retires when he is about 50 haha

I have a feeling that John McCormick was once landlord of the 'Drum and Monkey' in Gloucester Road.

He must be in his 80s now, God bless him.

just off the top of my head John McCormick (born 18 July 1936 in Glasgow, Scotland),is a former professional footballer. Playing as a centre back he made a total of 334 appearances in the Football League and Scottish League, for Third Lanark, Aberdeen and Crystal Palace before moving into non-league football with Wealdstone.

If I remember correctly Bert Head signed John McCormick for £1,500 and was described as being the number one target.

Yes, Mel Blyth whom we signed from scunthorpe.
Master of the backpass to his keeper !
I have a feeling he went on to be a driving instructor after he finished playing football.

OK, I'll take a deep breath here and get ready for the inevitable barage......

First off I doubt anyone would disagree that Damo has been a brilliant servant to the club. Incredible to think it looked like his career was effectively over when we got him from Ipswich. Over the last few years he has led by example on the pitch and we have lost count he number of times he has thrown himself in front of a shot to block it.

However IMHO his time is coming to the end as being at the heart of our defense. He is getting slower and to compensate for this he has to `charge in` and attempt to win the ball first time as soon as an opposition attacker gets it. He isn't quick enough on the turn anymore. This means because he has to `charge in` to win it first time he is often giving away free kicks in dangerous positions. We have to steadily progress and he is not getting any younger and is getting slower, time to integrate Tomkins into the team to be the partnership alongside Dann.

Agree with this completely. He been immense for us that is not in dispute. He has surprised me as I had doubts whether he could make the step up to Prem football, but fair play he did. He is a leader and a warrior and wears his heart on his sleeve.

However lets not let nostalgia blinker our view, He is coming to the end and I think he knows it to. I find that more and more mistakes are creeping in to his game. He does have a very annoying habit of committing really silly fouls that he has no need to do. Although I think thats a case of just simply not being quick enough or good enough to get their first.

He's been an amazing servant to the club but if we are looking to progress to the next level then I'm sorry he's just not good enough to take us their.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Just checked Wikipedia Willo and indeed you are spot-on!

Instead of saying 'I have a feeling' before every fact, just put some facts on here for people to read, rather than claiming to know everything. That is why you get grief from people on here.
