It's a public flogging. He's their ringleader and therefore if he's done something wrong, needs to be shamed publically so that everyone else knows what is coming if they follow suit. From the clubs and local authorities point of view, worth every penny in a public show of force. That's right, He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy.
