And yes I agree, he has been key ever since we came up, but so far he's struggled to get going. That is all I am saying, bloody hell.

OK.But i don't see a very long line of quality English right backs if Clynne gets injured again.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Exactly - a poor Ward is still better than Johnson.

very true, but I still don't think ward's the best option we've got personally. And let's be honest, this whole thing speaks volumes of the state the national team's in right now

Can't argue with that

Ward has been great all year. When paired with Townsend in the beginning of the year didn't have the rapport with him, but when Zaha came back on the right he works very well with him.

Tell me a bad game (not one individual moment - which every back has) that he has had this year...

Let's be fair - more (a lot) than once Ward has been one of our weakest players, but funny enough - never had real competition in team. Guess next summer we will have an upgrade on the right back position? BTW, only talking about JW as a player - he seems such a great person to have around..

If Ward has been one of our weakest players it seems odd none of managers have tried to replace him.

One of my favourite players as he seems loyal to the club and works had for the team.. as for technical ability, does he really have what it takes to play for England? I don't think so IMO.

Ward was poor last season, but so far this season he's looking good he looks a yard quicker. It could be the change of tactics allows him to get forward more? But he's nowhere near good enough for England.

Ward, for me, was one of the few players that came up with us to the Premier League that I felt would be "Premiership ready" and I think in the first of those seasons he was right up there. Last season I thought he had gone off the boil a little. Still a great player, but I was disappointed that I felt he wasn't quite at his previous best. He's started well this season and don't get me wrong, I have no concern seeing his name on the teamsheet every week. Testimony to his ability, you rarely hear fans on this forum begging for us to sign a right back each transfer window.

However, I feel that he might be better than some players who DO get England games, maybe... but I wouldn't have really judged him to be quite good enough to play for the country. To put my comment in perspective, if Joel Ward was an England first team player then I'd see it more as a reflection on the lack of decent English fullbacks rather than the quality of the player.

I'll put my tin hat on in case anyone decides to ignore 90% of what I've said and thinks I am having a go at a defender I actually rate.
