Plenty of businesses, private and public sector, are forced to have a 'representative' workforce with their quotas of ethnic minorities, women etc. If the pendulum has swung the other way, then there should be nothing wrong with encouraging businesses to take on more British workers to give a representative workforce and opportunities for locals.

"Spastic" offends me and is generally classed as offensive (Hence the spastic society changing their name to scope). so why hasn't that been blanked out?

Probably because the word has descriptive value and meaning beyond being a term of offence, in general language. Whilst referring to a person as a spastic is offensive, the word does have use, I guess, outside that (in English).

When I worked in Singapore I had to go through a process where I had to prove that my job could not be done by a local.

When I employed people, and I wanted to employ ex-pats, I had to prove that the job could not be done by a local.

It is a common practice around the World. For example, getting a Green Card or exemption to work in australia is complex and difficult if you are doing a job where the local pool of potential employees is significant.

Why should we be different? Do you think it is correct for some businesses to farm out cheap labour to immigrants instead of paying reasonable wages to British workers?

And cut out the unsubstianted guff in he last paragraph. Overreaction for political reasons.

Not really. A proper, right wing, rabid Daily Mail type policy.

To your main point though- no, I don't think it is correct for business to farm out cheap labour to foreign workers. Neither do I think it correct that foreign workers who have sought a job here should be demonised as taking the job of a British citizen.

The Tory conference showed a real pandering to the hard right of the party over foreign workers. I actually think your point about systems like the Australian one is a good one- and should be the sort of more moderate policy we SHOULD be aiming for. Not a tabloid pleasing, 'name and shame' policy.

Also, out of interest- how do you prove your job cannot be done by a local? Qualifications/experience presumably? Genuinely interested as it sounds like Singapore have a very strict system! I understand certain countries (Qatar for one) have even stricter systems.

No one gets offended by the word "idiot" any more but the history of the word is not dissimilar to the word "spastic".

That's the synopsis of a Lars Von Trier film.
