To your main point though- no, I don't think it is correct for business to farm out cheap labour to foreign workers. Neither do I think it correct that foreign workers who have sought a job here should be demonised as taking the job of a British citizen.

The Tory conference showed a real pandering to the hard right of the party over foreign workers. I actually think your point about systems like the Australian one is a good one- and should be the sort of more moderate policy we SHOULD be aiming for. Not a tabloid pleasing, 'name and shame' policy.

Also, out of interest- how do you prove your job cannot be done by a local? Qualifications/experience presumably? Genuinely interested as it sounds like Singapore have a very strict system! I understand certain countries (Qatar for one) have even stricter systems.
