Of all the strikers we were linked with Benteke was definitely MY first choice due to him being proven in the Premier League and such a good fit with our style.

I think he was definitely our first choice but the deal proved difficult to progress.

We had secondary targets - whether they were genuine or not - and we pursued them when it looked like we wouldn't be able to secure Benteke.

Fortunately in the end it all came good. Yes we paid a lot of money. But he is already starting to repay it, and looking good value.

At 25 he still has his best years ahead of him, whether he plays those for us or moves away in a big money transfer we'll have recouped most if not all or more than what we paid for him. Fantastic Acquisition.

Either way we're in a dream win win situation holding his registration. Will either help us do some great things, or we'll get the type of money that finally gives us real clout in the transfer market ala what spurs had with Bale.

No luck about it at all. The club always said they wanted two new strikers and that's what they got. They also paid Liverpool's asking price of £32 million in paying £27 million plus £5 million add-ons.

We didn't pay Liverpool's asking price as the final agreement was a compromise. The problem with add-ons is that they are conditional payments and those conditions aren't always met.

There was a certain amount of luck that whilst we were haggling no-one else stepped in and paid the asking price and I'm not sure that if we had missed out on Benteke that we would have found a replacement of similar quality

I heard we were really keen in January to take him on loan, Pardew had been talking to him since then which is why he was so keen to join us. We made him feel a wanted (and key) part of our plans.

I was told before FA Cup final that Benteke was our first choice. I believe that Marseille used us to flush out the Chelsea bid, in return we were given first refusal on Mandanda. Not sure how much of second part is true but it makes sense, but know for sure Benteke was first choice

That would add credence to SP's trip to Marsaille on Jan.13th,as tweeted by SP and reported on HLTCO.Of course,it doesn't proveanything.

Well interesting thought: how about both of them playing together after the january transfer window The guy does not get gametime at all at Chelsky and is class.

In June we had a 32m bid accepted for Batshuayi before he moved to Chelsea. Does this mean Benteke was second choice or were we somehow in a position where we could have bid for both? If so, does this indicate that we'll have a healthy transfer kitty in January?
