God this is tedious As someone said, he failed to impress a number of managers at this level and whenever he did start, he normally got subbed because he wasn't half as effective from kick-off as he was as a sub. Yes he's killing it this season but he's playing in the strongest team in the league, by quite a distance. Also, sometimes it's better to take a step back, to take a step forward. He should become a better player and be more effective in the Prem' next year as a result of this season. That doesn't mean we were wrong to sell him. £10m for a player who hadn't kicked on was a cracking deal. If you still think we were wrong to sell 30yr old, ACL recover'ie Murray, you're beyond help.

Gayle was never going to cut it as the "Lone Striker" but he definitely had an eye for goal. Wickham has had more impactful performances for Palace than Gayle. Without Wickham up front last year we really struggled and when he got a run of games he showed he can do it. I'm not suggesting he should replace Benteke, but from what I've seen he's more useful to us than Gayle was as he fills a key position and, even if he doesn't score, he is involved in the game. He's also still only 23.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

He's a top class forward when playing in a team that dominates possession and the pitch. Get the ball to him in and around the box with his face to goal and he'll score a hat full. Palace played on the break with little last third possession, so not his game. I have a £10 at 9/1 for top scorer

I agree. I am putting my tin hat on, but I think we were more than adequately compensated for Bolasie, Gayle, Jedinak and Murray. If they are worth more than we sold them for to their new clubs then so be it, but we've gone from being a club that used to let all our players through the revolving door on free transfers to a club that is selling our players for very acceptable prices.

I almost added that. When you think of the players we've brought in and their net cost we've done ok I'd say. And I am including Cabaye and Wickham in that statement, who may not have set the world alight yet at Palace, but are a marked improvement on some of the personnel we've previously had to call upon.

A better question would have been '' why did we sign Gayle ? '' We didn't try very hard to get the best out of him, only persisted with trying to turn him into something he isn't. I was never a huge fan of his, but there is a lot of people that thought he could be effective with a target man alongside...unfortunately none of them were Palace managers !

My only guess (and it is a guess) was that we were expecting to play a different formation than we ended up with. Similarly I often wondered why we'd signed Bannan and Guedioura. They seemed decent players but not really suited to the system.

The top 5 scorers in the Championship currently include 3 former palace players. I'd take Benteke and Townsend over Gayle and Bolassi any day of the week.
