Real Reason We Lost.

Hoof Hearted 16 Oct 16 9.23am

I think the reason we lost was all about preparation and application of a game plan as well as sloppy finishing and a general air of malaise about our team.

WHU came out all guns blazing and were on top of us for the first 25 minutes pressing us hard and getting down their left flank with Cresswell finding space to cross into our box and Payet with room to feed him.

We were lucky not to be more than 1-0 down before we stemmed the tide and began to contain their threat.

Why are we so woeful at pressing teams and yet allow them to pin us back? Watch Leicester and in particular Vardy - he runs his nuts off to shut down a building attack from the front. Compare and contrast with any of our attacking players who amble around when we haven't got the ball.

The penalty we missed was typical of the day we were having, careless and clumsy. Beforehand I was convinced he would use power rather than a chip.

2nd half we had more possession but we were wasteful of opportunities - the free kick Townsend passed to Ward that he wasn't expecting on his left foot was typical of the bad decisions made.

WHU going down to 10 made little difference either and time ran out on us.

For me the only bonus was that Cabaye looked as though he was on the mend and eager to contribute.

If we play like that again next week Leicester will beat us easily.

You can't pin the blame for this loss on one player's lack of concentration. It seems that when Benteke has a bad game, then the rest of the team do too. The forward passing was atrocious that is why, it seems, when attacking, the ball was invariably passed back. The crosses were abysmal. When the ball did get to the Spammers end it was wasted. Punch needs to concentrate his training next week on passing the ball to a Palace player!

This perfectly summarises our first half especially. Puncheon was terrible.

We may also need to sort out a kit that can be seen against those awful glaring neon hoardings! Maybe start using our away kit at home?

I thought we seemed to be crowded out most of the time and consequently went for the long diagonal ball much more than we have been doing. West ham then had three big centre backs doing their best to keep Benteke off the ball. Every time the ball was put in the box it seemed very crowded also. I just wish Wickham had been able to get a little closer and above the ball for his last minute header.

Good points. If Benteke was being taken off the ball by 3 centre backs then what were the other supposedly attacking minded players doing ? Unfortunately that was one of the pieces in the jigsaw that didn't materialise pre season but we seemed to be looking. Hopefully we won't stand still in Jan but continue targeting quality in this area as it needs improvement particularly in games like yesterday where our first shot on target was on 60 mins at home. Other issues were their 3-5-2 formation stifling us so easily and the lack of clean sheets at the back due to a number of silly errors over a number of games such as yesterday, WBA and the Spuds.

real reason we lost.

west ham did a job on us and because they played 3 at the back with wing backs we had very little space in the final 3rd to operate in.

we go again next week against a poor leicester side

Interesting point by Henry of Peckham. We seem. To play better in our away strip.

That red and blue is a bit murky under our floodlights.

The match was like our home defeat to S'land last season.

Agree with the above. We could all see that they were going to score but never changed things until half time. After 10 minutes something needed to be done. They took the game to us and it paid off for them.

The West Ham formation caused us all manner of grief and we couldn't fully adjust till half time. The new gameplan worked well in the second half and we dominated by playing the ball on the floor. In the 53rd minute Benteke received the ball to his feet for the first time all game and held it up and played it wide superbly. We seem to be able to be forced away from our gameplan early in nearly every game so far and AP has mentioned it on occasions that we didn't start as he expected. As someone said we need a Gerrard type in midfield and more pace at the back in the fb areas IMO. Cabaye also has to start. I really don't care what the nay sayers are bleating about, he is one of our best players and knows how to control a game. The transition in style will take a little longer and with that we will still sometimes be caught between two stools, but it will come good I'm sure of it.

Completely agree. It was evident after 10 minutes that Bilic had done his homework and got his tactics right.

We were given a lifeline with the penalty, and if you don't take them then expect nothing. It's a shame Benteke missed because I think any confidence West Ham had may well have severely knocked and we may well have gone on to take the points.

We were f****** s*** because we were underprepared.
We were underprepared because we prepared poorly.

I blame the rain. Don't think Benteke dealt with it well. Generally they coped with the rain better then us.

We lost by one goal, forgive the cliché but if they hadn't of scored we wouldn't have lost.McArthur switched off for one second, got the wrong side and Lanzini scored.Simple as that and if you asked McArthur he would be the first to admit it.Those of you who are whining about AP not preparing the team do not have a clue about the finer points of the game imo,Bilic and bad individual performances cost us three points while McArthur cost us one.We win a few games, play well and then we lose one. That does not mean the manager is not doing the same job or the players not making the same effort,it means we didn't perform well enough on the day and that happens for Sunday League pub teams let alone a PL team where the margins are fag paper thin. There were positives yesterday but if you choose to believe a few posters on here you would think we had just been stuffed 4-0 with Mike Basset as manager.
