Abba, aren't and never have been great, it is however pleasurable and fun. They're just the best of the also rans. Like Meatloaf, fun enjoyable, but lacking in any real critical acclaim and value. Which is fine. But never great or anything 'special'. Obviously I'm something of a snob, so my view of Colins as the Noel Edmunds of Dad Rock is a slight, but I do have some respect that he's made a constant career over decades, without really making any 'contribution' to the art etc. Good Pop music always has a place, but part of that is also being sneered at, by generations that follow. But in truth, anyone who can make a life long high profile career in music has some quality above the average disposabile pop music.

For the record, Abba are really s**t. But they're kind of s**t like a good B movie is s**t, so much so that its fun. They're perfect bubblegum pop. Catchy, trashy and so uncool, they've acquired an ironic cool (Abba never tried or aimed to be cool). The fact that their revival in recent years has its basis in the spoof band Bjorn Again, says everything you need to know. Nostalgia and music have a very strong relationship, so much so, that had Proust been writing now, he'd have written about how the music that was on the radio in our childhood, when heard in adulthood, engages a longing for a romanticised past that never existed Perfect pop music is a rare, rare thing.

Abba is what would have come out of a 1970s Third Reich. It's exactly what Nazi pop would have been like.
