For Sussex based readers "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" by Robert Tressel. My favourite novel and is set in Hastings

Continuing along the sussex theme the Roy Grace series by Peter James are well worth a go. I will admit to being a fan of Lee Childs books and those by Andy Mcnab. No book snob am i.

Iain Banks are all good but my top 3 would be

1) The Crow Road
2) The Wasp Factory
3) Walking on Glass

Seconded, although I'd switch 2 and 3.

Also

Iain M. Banks

1) Consider Phlebas
2) Player of Games
3) Use of Weapons

Actually 2 and 3 are better than 1, but 1 gives the vital context of the Culture from an outsider.
