If you are a manager in the PL of a mid or lower-mid table team and you have have any sort of success you are invariably snapped up by a bigger team. To my mind only Ranieri and possibly Howe have the full backing of their supporters plus some modicum of success in the PL last season. This says a lot about the state of the modern football fan; the gimme more generation. If any of the three promoted teams fail to stay up then their managers will probably lose the confidence of some supporters too.

I look down the table and I would say probably two thirds of the teams currently have whinging, over-expectant fans complaining their manager is rubbish. Personally I think we have one of the best teams that I can remember in the last 25 years and we are making a real effort to play better football. I would be incredibly surprised if anyone could find a manager who would do better with what we have and who would want to come to us.

Also, we're only three points off Manure right now

I too think that the word "slate" is probably harsh.
I am not a Pardew lover at all and I think that long term he will cost us money without achieving much - yes I know we got to an FA Cup final but we lost and if he had anything about him he would have called the players over after we scored and told them what to do in the lst 8 minutes instead of doing a stupid dance!
We have to see what happens this season but he has some good players at the club now and he needs to make it work - there are no excuses in my opinion.
We should be able to achieve at least 50 points this season with our current squad but already we have dropped points at home against West Brom, Bournemouth and West Ham - we got 1 point from those three games - I expected 6 minimum.
We don't look like scoring unless it is through Benteke (yes - I know Stoke - but they were truly awful that day)and he alone will not score the goals we need.
We ball watch, we don't mark closely enough, we are not aggressive enough, we have no real Leader on the field - the list goes on.
AP needs to sharpen up and get Palace back to a team who fights when things aren't going so well - I just don't see that Palace spirit anymore and in my opinion there is only one man responsible for that I'm afraid!
I love Palace - I have supported them for over 50 years and just because I don't like the Manager will not stop me supporting them and wanting us to win every game.
I hope he proves me ridiculously wrong!

Alan Pardew teams have never had the best defensive reord. This is whats letting us down at the moment, whether a good defensive coach can help this not sure.

Being in the premier league for our longest period has raised all our expectations i think we are a 10-15 place team i cant see us breaking into top 10 for couple of years if we stay up.

What do you think will happen in the next couple of years then to change this?

I had to laugh when I read winning the Premiership being described as just a "modicum of success" but hey ho, this is HOL after all

Not really into slating the manager, as ultimately it's the players who let us down. In defence of Pardew, he has no worse than any other manager in the last 25 years, in my view better than most.

Wishing for better things is natural, but not always achievable. Man Utd have a so called super manager, the most expensive player in the world, one of the most expensive squads, but still look rubbish.

It's not an easy job, this is the most competitive league in the world.

I only added modicum because I included Bournemouth. Your nit-picking hyperbolic response is more common place. I hope you, Snow White and the other dwarves get to laugh at this post too.

Leicester on paper aren't better than us really. People are getting carried away because they won the league - would swap Fuchs with Kelly, Huth or Morgan with Damo and Mahrez with townsends but other than that I don't see any superiority "on paper". My biggest issue with Pardew is I don't see any improvement - if results were poor but you could see evidence of us evolving then fair enough but it's bulls*** in my opinion. Tactically we have looked completely lost for a long long time and we only ever seem to look good when we do the exact thing pardew supposedly wants to come away from which is sitting deep and nicking a couple by set pieces/on the break. The reason we are good at those things are because of the defensive foundations laid out by Pulis.

Under pardew, as time goes on, we look weaker and weaker at the back - regardless of injuries. It's all well and good saying you want to change the style of play but the goals we've scored this season have typically mainly been from set pieces or headers from Benteke. The only change I see is us looking more flimsy at the back.

My point is we should expect to win more games given players we've signed under him, if we go on a little 3 game run it's nice but I honestly do not think many managers would've struggled to beat Sunderland Stoke and Boro with the players we had at our disposal. I just don't see us pushing on and fulfilling our actual potential under Pardew.

if you think we're as good as the League winners then there's no point in trying to put forward a rational argument as to whether Pards/Palace are any good/should be doing better

i agree with a lot of the sentiment on here from both sides.

I can see where the OP is coming from.... it doesn't take much for us to slip back in form does it?

I want to know why we don't "press" teams? Okazaki was closing us down like his life depended on it, and Ward let him go to score their 2nd. Where was our urgency, fight or spirit that Okazaki showed?

I also agree with the rest in that now is not the time to "slate" Pardew. We would have benefited on Saturday if Dann and Puncheon played, but even so Leicester City away is a fixture we traditionally lose 2-0. As it was we dominated the first half hour and didn't turn this into goals.... it's not Pardew's fault Benteke didn't score with that header or last week's penalty is it?

I expect we will lose again on Saturday v Liverpool according to recent form, but hope we don't.

Pardew and Parrish are slowly improving the club in my opinion, and we have to be patient, but it doesn't hurt to have a discussion about our progress every now and then.

I can have some sympathy with the frustration, as one minute we are quality and the next very poor.

However, that said, this is our 4th full season in the top flight. Look at the other teams who have been around that long: West Brom, Sunderland, Swansea, Southampton, West Ham and Leicester. Now three of those had very good seasons, two of them were anomalous and the other because they are a very well run club.

Given that, is expecting to finish top 10 in a league with the old big 4 plus Man City, Spurs and Leicester that realistic when you also have teams like Southampton and Everton?

Change doesn't happen over night (99% of the time) and of it does, that can be very detrimental (see: QPR, Cardiff, ManUre, Spurs back in the day..).

Slating Pardew isn't the answer when we've lost a bad game in shocking rain and another versus the champions of England.
