I suppose one could debate as to what is a "Right area" or "Dangerous area".! It is said that a "Dangerous cross" is one delivered curling away from the keeper in that so called "Area of uncertainty" waiting to be attacked centrally but certain players like Andy Carroll like to take up a position at the back post so this sort of cross is not ideal for him.A cross to the far post for Carroll is a cross delivered into the "Right area".
I suppose at the end of the day if a cross picks out a player who scores it is a good cross !

I am meeting up with an assistant manager of a league club tonight so I will ask him about all this "Crossing" business !!!!

Another argument would be that top strikers make average crosses into good ones! Kellys cross to Benteke Saturday springs to mind.

Souare is left footed and is quick to deliver, which can work out brilliantly and other times the ball disappears into the heavens. He delivered a peach of a ball which Wickham scored off at the end of last season (I seem to remember). Kelly meanwhile is right footed and nearly always cuts in on his right foot in order to cross. I think his lack of a decent left foot was also exposed against West Ham. Souare does make mistakes but he's so quick and athletic that he can often recover, which is something Kelly and Ward often struggle with.

I worry about teams becoming aware of our weakness and exploiting it. I know others have suggested it but perhaps try Ledley there. He is good in the tackle and can pass and he's no slower than Kelly, plus he's struggled (in my opinion) in centre midfield of late.

Personally think Kelly's done well, considering he's a centre back playing left back. I think it says more about Fryers that AP prefers a right footed centre in that position than an actual left footed left back.

As for the attacking threat, Souare is far superior to Kelly but is that really a surprise to anyone?! Regardless of his crossing ability Souare seemed to develop an understanding with each winger last season and I can only imagine he would of done the same with Townsend.

His crossing when he puts one in by the byline is of a high standard but all too often he hits them first time, too early and far outside the left hand side of the opposition box. Once he's back, hopefully it will allow him to overlap on the outside whilst Townsend has the opportunity to cut inside leaving the opposition with a difficult decision to make on whether to go with the ball or anticipate the pass to the outside runner thus leaving more space for our attackers to work in and him the opportunity to cross closer to the box.

Judging PS's crossing ability based on direct assists? Oh please, don't waste my time replying to that-we've had nobody in the right areas to convert them, or the wrong players ie Zaha, Yala, cabaye, Campbell. Whilst I agree he usually looks to cross early (pros and cons) his consistently is excellent, occasionally they go back stick but in theory a big man should be there. I sit on half way I'm the AW so have the perfect view. With Benteke or Wickham in there he'll get assists. As for kelly, the cross for Tekkers was excellent, but it was also a one off.

why are people talking about Souare? He could be better than beckham/Ronaldo/Bale/Messi at delivery but its academic now, you wont see him on a pitch in anger this season I can assure you.

In that comparison, Kelly is a million % better.

Tomkins at right back, ward at left back could work, with dann and delaney at centre back. On paper very solid.

That or fryers at left back, who i would pick over kelly.

The quicker Delany is demoted to the bench the better. Love the guy...but his lack of quality on the ball is screwing us.

It is all a game of opinions.

Mine is that defensively we really do need to upgrade in a big way.

Mandanda, Dann and Tomkins are fine but then there is the rest.

Ward is an okay full back who has good games and bad. to take us to the next level though we need someone better.

Kelly is a poor mans Ward. He does a job when required but is never going to be first choice anywhere across the back line.

Souare, well we have to assume he will recover just fine. We do though need someone as good if not better than him especially as regards defensive duties.

Delaney I have huge respect for and will remember him forever. This season though he is being exposed and perhaps the years have sadly caught up with him.

Fryers is not the answer whatever the question may be. I can see his forward runs, I can see his closing down but I have not yet seen him put in one tackle!

Just my thoughts and I appreciate I am watching the games on television rather than live.

I think the lad gets a lot of unfair criticism.
Put Wardy at left back see how he performs , Kelly is a good solid professional who has been asked to perform at all positions across the back and performed well.
His cross to Benteke should have put us one up but hey it didnt and we got beat. He is no way inferior to Wardy , from what ive seen Wardy is a shadow of himself and very poor , fryers no way is Prem class , soure obviously is missed hes dynamic but lets not forget his defensive qualities are very limited !!!! Lets get behind what weve got and get the bin dippers beat at the weekend !!!

Fryers has been brought on for his pace in attack when we have been chasing games.

I don't think Fryers would have got on the pitch at all if we'd have been winning.

I'd worry if he started over Kelly.

But I'd love to be proven wrong.

Jesus! No my 20 years of Palace I can't think of a Palace player who can cross better than Soare- that's his main asset. Absolutely whips them in and gets them in early. Kelly on the other hand is a right footed CB playing at LB which says enough.

On the conversation however I think Kelly is a better defender than Fryers so would prefer him at present. Perhaps swap with Ward and get him in a RB

let's put it this way: LB should be the number one priority (underline it and go over with a highlighter if you want) in January. Kelly is not good enough.

with a new manager of course
