Surly if they were stereotypical gay men they should have been able to knock up a decent cake between themselves?

In truth, as a straight man, I don't think I've ever ordered a special cake or made one.

The world has changed an awful lot in 160 years so I'm not sure that we should get nostaglic about what came before.

That and using the fact that homosexuality was unjustly illegal until recent decades is not reason to restrict peoples role in society. It is instead reason to wake up to the role people should be allowed to play.

As usual, you have responded to a post without reading any of the context in which it was made.

The actual original point was Jamie's' contention that marriage has nothing to do with the church, which I countered with the fact that until 160 years ago there was no marriage outside of the church.

No one was discussing the rights or wrongs of homosexuality being legal or illegal, rightly or wrongly, and whilst 160 years may be a long time in terms of social changes, you cannot just write off 2000+ years of history and tradition.

It's a matter of opinion of course. If we take Jamie's point to be correct then there is no arguement to be had.

If we take your point, then expanding marriage to gay people is hardly the total writing off of history and tradition. That is of course unless you believe gay people get married to spite other people and their beliefs, instead of because they have fallen in love and hold a deep respect for marriage.

It's also quite the Christian tradition for women to be awarded inferior status and to restrict their voice and role in society. I don't get nostalgic about that either. I think it's quite disgusting and am glad that common sense and fairness sometimes trump doctrine.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

No one is writing it off though, all of the religious aspects have been preserved - You can still get married in churches, with full religious ceremony etc and those churches are not obligated to perform gay marriage either. So the history and tradition are all fine, its just that exceptions have been made for those who don't fit into the assorted religious formats, and to rationalise these traditions into a legal framework.

Surely the most important talking point is the fact that Bert and Earnie have been outed.
