We always used to have Sunday lunch but fell out of the habit a few years ago and nowadays if we have a roastie it is in the evening like yourselves

Also the only day of the week I had a desert as well. so much so that one scorching summers day one of my brother's decided to light the bbq and and she went mental because she couldn't do a roast (she is quite hot headed to be fair and doesn't take much to start her off)

I had a convo along the sames lines with some mates a few weeks back, don't kids get made to sit at the table until they've finished their food anymore?? and if not, why not?

They get told to stay until everyone is finished. They are quite good at eating the meat and the rest is picked at. There comes a point where a nice meal is spoilt with arguments about who wants to get down, who isn't hungry, who doesn't want it and so on. Sort of defeats the object when you spend several hours prepping, cooking and sitting down for it to descend into chaos

When I was a young girl my Mother said to me.. You listen here kid you're CPFC

oh i totally know where you are coming from but this is part of a larger 'thing' in my mind. when i was a kid, you sat there till the end of time, whining or no whining. In fact, you didn't whine, you got on with it.

I just wonder where it changed

I try and cook something special on a Sunday, be it a roast of something else.

Yesterday I did a slow cooked ragu. It took me three hours but was worth it.

Think I cook a roast most sundays - although not all. Some of the kids' activities are now Sunday late morning which can make it more difficult.

My mum encouraged me as a kid. She did almost all the cooking but would make sure I was included and expected to do some as well. I would say I now do most of the from-scratch cooking done in my house and I love it.

If we refused to eat it, we got sent to our room and then had it dished up next mealtime for another go.(we cant afford to waste food). Its no wonder i'm mentally unstable.

that's what I mean, something somewhere clicked and now that's looked upon as a bad thing to do.

Anybody got any tips for their roasts?

I read a technique (Delia Smith I think) a while ago which has served me well. Essentially chopping up all the carrots / parsnips / potatoes and whichever other veg needs doing, placing it all in a big baking tray with a load of oil and some unpeeled cloves of garlic. Then placing the chicken on top, basting with the oil and roasting it all together like that.

Naturally every 15/20 minutes you need to catch some of the oil and drizzle it over the chicken to stop it drying out but the combination of the garlic and vegetables infuses the oil with a fantastic flavour. Naturally not very healthy though.

Why is it not healthy? Everything is roasted?
